Advice on poly limits.....
« on: October 25, 2004, 09:53:19 am »
This one goes out to anyone who's ever built a model from scratch.....  It's really just an advice point but what should I reasonable expect to aim for poly count wise???  The models I already have are anything from sub 1000 to 15,000 plus and most Connie derivitives rolling in anywhere from 5000 to 11000 polys (all that curvyness I suppose).... Now for my previous bashmodels, I've tried to keep it under 10,000 but if I've only made half the model I've not got much control over the rest...

Anyway I was hoping someone can give me some pointers..... ;D ;D

Cheers everyone

keeping it 7k polys tops is usually a good idea unless you intent to make a one time ubersuper ship then you propably could use upto 11k (such as amarals excalibur, his others are less poly heavy)

Depends on the kind of player you are and who you want to use your models.

There are basically two kinds. The Dynaverse/GSA player and the model collector.

The former will want to keep the polys low, under 6-7k, so as to have acceptable frame rates in game while using multiple ships... Polys add up fast dragging down the playability of the game to such that some higher poly models,no matter how good, sit in zip format on their hard drive...

The latter will usually pass on decent looking lower poly models awaiting one or choosing another that exhibits true and or exacting detail and quality of workmanship. These models are typically 7500-9000+ polys.

and considering that many of the gamers here are rather "old school" and not just school (nyah)  :P
its good to keep wondering " hows this gonna run on a 500mhz puter" while making a model ... however that is just my personal opinion :)

.... which is why I aked you guys... I have to decide from the off how many polies I'll end up with as I cant change it after.... You see, this is the problem with a lot of Federation designs.  Primary hulls tend to be curved in all 3 directions and if the counts too low then it look a bit angular, which I'll admit is probably great for TNG+ era but not really my bag!!!!

Anyhoooo from what I read it seems that I should aim for 7000 or there abouts... Nice one, so far...

By the way, does anyone actually USE the Chandley I did months ago???  The only reason I ask is mainly from the point that that is a 10,000 poly model (give or take) and could be problematic on lower spec systems.... I digress... :o :o :o

yeap it used. but i dont have a low end system and the only time things act up is when there is the few 50000 polied ships in the game that i have. have gotten around to reducing them yet.lol otherwise poly count dont affect my system much. its a 2800 AMD xp + processor and 1 gig ddr ram with a 256 ddr vid card. lol

With no problems, once again I have a fairly high-end system and I use Wicked Zombies models as a benchmark for poly counts. BTW did you ever do that version of the Chandley with WZ parts, I seem to recall you talking of it and maybe even seeing some WIP shots of it but don't know what happened after that.

...well, here's the story.... That part of my ongoing project has been put aside for a while and I have (so far anyway) opted not to use any existing parts from other models and will be constructing a new Chandley Class from scratch.... This is in no way a reflection of WZ's existing models (which are superb of course) but I feel I'll never progress and "mature" as a prospective modeller if I don't make something that's 100% me...

The stuff that WZ (and others) makes are the best I've seen and I considerthem benchmarks for me to aim for... Wether it all works out, who knows...

Once I get my hosting/website sorted out, the Chandley I've already done will be available again (should anyone want it) as the "FASA" version but a totally 100% new one will be available when I get around to doing it...  That said, I still plan on releasing the "Phase II" version at some point in the future as it's practically completed.  I'm not in the same vein as the more prolific modellers on this forum and things always take for ever for me complete but hopefully when the site gets relaunched, the new stuff will follow... :P :P :P
