Just an oddball question as to what defines a server...
« on: October 22, 2004, 10:10:35 pm »
Sometimes I get to wondering about this community.

Wasn't one of the things people wanted, at least occasionally, during Gook's 13+ point discussion series, was "simpler servers?"

You know, servers that don't focus on RMs / VCs / rules / mandatory activities / reporting / obeying / etc.?

While we're "suffering" with the lack of KCWs Head Admin and house leader, we could be playing on any number of "simpler" SFC servers.

You know, like the one Bonk is providing right now, which is even using materials that make up the KCW theme... :D

Oh, I forgot.  Because Bonk included the word "test" in the title, that suddenly made it an exclusive server where you can't play the game right now.

Or is it because there's no sense in having a server without RMs / VCs / rules / mandatory activities / reporting / obeying / etc. because you can't have a winner without all that junk, right?

I've been online satisfying my SFC fix as "Koloth_Kinshaya" when I haven't been watching my childhood baseball team commit history.  I'll admit, part of what keeps me playing SFC after 2 years is the strategic planning etc. that I can do / watch during those servers with all the RMs / VCs / rules / mandatory activities / reporting / obeying / etc. baggage.  Lite, on-the-fly games, as available on both Herr Burt's PF server and Bonk's current KCW incarnation, don't have all the stuff that makes me come back daily to play.

However, all of you who have expressed a desire to play on these "lite" servers, where are you?  Perhaps some PvP would give me more reasons to get on and play... ;)

Maybe they're playing EVE because that kind of server doesn't really appeal as much as is thought?

I'm of the opinion that this long delay is making people lose interest and almost encouraging them to try out different games. I think you can tell that from the quietness of the forums, mostly it's just the same few posting.

I don't think that some down time is a big problem, in the overall scheme of things. Sure, folks will find something else to do in the meantime. You can't expect them to stand by idle and do nothing. I'm pretty certain that if a good campaign goes up, they'll come and play it. After all, pretty much everyone that's here has been doing this for some time now. I wouldn't expect them to just quit all of a sudden. My $.02 is take the time to make sure that you give them something good to play and announce it enough ahead so that people have a chance to make plans to play it. I wouldn't expect them to just drop what they're doing on a moments notice.

Some simple, fun servers, are good for those who don't play anything else to keep them occupied in between the major campaigns. If you consider yourself a true blue fan, then you shouldn't mind doing a little playtesting (even if the concept isn't right up your alley) for the betterment of the game, IMO. If you want to draw more players then, help the people who organise and set up these things with the stuff that they're working on.
If Romulans aren't cowards, then why do they taste like chicken?

Server themes are what it's all about. Have a good theme, and add something different - doesn't matter what, as long as it's unique to that server.

Personally ..

It's not so much as the over all themes that have changed ..  but the game itself and perhaps other aspects that I will not go into.  Additionally for me two major things have changed in the last 18 months.

1.  I'm now a Dept. Director where I work ..  55 to 60 hour weeks are common place.  (So time is a bit scarce for me.

2.  I have became more active in designing ships and other things for community..  I also try to help Nanner with his mod from time to time ..  ( we're doing some testing this weekend).  After all he is my son ..  and I do what I can to be supportive in what limited means I have at my disposal.

IMHO ... Get the right mixes again ..  and there will be plenty of folk to play ...  on BOTH sides of the teams !

thanks

Bingo.  This game is old, pointless hex-munching is, well, pointless.  Meeting with 10 guys for IP games is way more fun.

If we are feeling un-creative we can always recycle.   Storm Seaon 2 was awesome a SS3 could be just as cool.

I think a server based on the old RP threads would be interesting!

have the empires on the Empire level of the map and use the cartel level for W.A.N.K.E.R.
