Has anybody here ever broken thier a*s before?
« on: October 18, 2004, 01:11:29 pm »
I broke my tailbone this weekend and would not even wish this experience on my worst enemy.  The only store around that sells the little round pillows (donut pillows) with the hole in the middle so you can actually sit down was closed until today and this happend Friday night.  Had to SIT through 2 hours+ of GZ matches last night which sucked...(matches were OK but I could have done without the sitting part).

Incidentally I slipped on something at the top of a friends stairs and fell down them.  Bruised my left heal (in the back) quite badly as well as the back of my right thigh.

Good news is I have the donut pillow now and I can sit without it hurting like motherf#$%*@r.

Anyway anybody that has any experience or  helpful tips to ease the healing process as there is nothing that the medical people can actually do would be greatly appreciated.

Ouch!

I prescribe booze. Lots of it. Stay pickled until it heals!
This time tested 'pig family cure also works for colds, the flu, hangovers, etc.

That might actually work if I didn't have to actually function in other aspects of real life.  LOL

Alcohol is not a pain killer. Try Motrin. If that doesn't work, sit on your head. Oh and drink a lot of milk.

Heh, I was joking Corb. Breaking my hand and having a freind set the bone introduced me to the fact that booze don't kill the pain.

Jeez Bach, thats what maw used to call me... <sniff>.... memories...

Hoi Folks,

Please do not kill pain. It is there to tell you that you are doing something wrong. If you kill the pain in artificial ways then you will continue to maintain the bad habit that is causing damage. Use your mind. Learn how to heal, stop running to pharmaceuticals. I know most of the west doesn't understand this but the mind and body work really well together if we just let them.
Ok, so your saying now is not the time to start thinking your way to recovery when there is this much pain. Actually, this is the best time; for when the pain goes away you will know what you did to make it happen.
 I speak from experience.

Take care

Anyways . . .

1)   It hurts like hell.

2)   Use the donut   (Don't let Matsukasi come to your house,  it could get ugly)

3)   Go see an orthopedic surgeon.  (See #4)

4)    Demand high quality narcotics.   (Tell'em J'inn sent ya.)

5)    If you smoke, STOP, it retards the bone healing process and will prolong your agony.

6)    You're going to go through several weeks of OUCH OUCH OUCH.   Sorry.

as a person that is in pain all of the time drb is correct, it may sound funny but it works become one with the pain and although you will be uncomfortable it will not be unbarable BUT there is nothing wrong with taking a couple ibuprofen or some aspirin to take the edge off until you get the hang of handling your pain mentally

I'm not sure if u can find this over there, but here in Mexico there is a spray which contains an hormone, Calcitonin, ( the commercial brand is Miocalcid ), Talk with ur Doctor about it. This hormone have two effects: It make ur bone to heal faster and second, when u used, it liberate endorphins, which are analgesics. I used on my father when he broke a couple of ribs, and work wonderful.
I hope u get better soon.

Ouch!

Yeah, I broke mine during Storm Season I, The Original.  That has more than a little to do with why I reached "nutter" status on that server.  I took a couple of days off before I realized the bone just wasn't going to heal quickly, so I might as well go on in to the job and suffer at work.

I learned you CAN play SFC and still be effective.  Standing will work for a while, as will rigging a bed and a lowered desk so you can play reclined.  (Just be careful of those sessions that go past 3AM; you can drift off to sleep and wake up having "landed" on a planet.)

To kill the pain, I just took Advil.  Lots and lots of Advil.  Cursing a lot seemed to help too.

Never Broke my a*s before, but I have had two Spinal Fusion surgeries.  Pain killers are so overrated,  I took the prescriptions for 1 week after the surgery each time (while I was in the hospital and when my mother made me) and "grinned and beared it" the rest of the time.  I think my tolerance for Pain (which had never really been real high) went up considerably.  That was six years ago when I was 18, what a way to spend a Christmas holiday, laid up.  Doc said that the pain could flare up again if I do something to my back that I'm not supposed to do.  Well this summer I did do something I wasn't supposed to do.  I spent two hours slouched over in a crawlspace looking for the Dominion War book four. (We put everything we didn't absolutely need into storage so we could try to sell our house).  Worst part of it, I still didn't find it.  But the next morning I woke up with such a pain in my back, so much so that I wanted nothing more than to get into that one spot where I was comfortable, and lay there all day.  Unfortunately...I also had to go to the bathroom, finally I decided that I didn't want to pee on the bed, but I also didn't want to scream for help either.  I got up, and the pain washed over me, so much so that I blacked out.  I vaguely recall hearing a thud, which I later found out was myself finally hitting the ground, and I woke up thirty feet away from where I blacked out (up two stairs and through a closed door, dont ask me how that happened).  I let out a loud moan, realizing that I was half-way into my sister's bedroom (thankfully she was at work) and completely unable to get up off the floor.  After my dad came up to give me a hand, I took a couple of Tylenol so I could get through the day.  Those are the only Pain Killers I've had since my surgery, hopefully they'll be my last.

Essentially, take it easy, the Body has a wonderful regeneration property, youd be surprised what it can fix if you let it.  Intake plenty of Calcium, and let your body do its work.

Don't know about after the fact but beer can be a good preventative medicine.  If you drink enough without sufficient exercise you can build a Fracture Avoidance Through Alcohol Supplimented Structure, aka FATASS to cushion your next fall........ ;D

This site has some suggestions about coping with the pain

Damn.  I remember when my mom broke hers.  And then broke it again, then had it removed, and then broke the piece just above that.

Afraid I can't remember what she did for it.  The pillow, sitz bath, umm, lots of fluffy stuff under the butt.

I'll see if I can find out anything.  Otherwise, ask your doctor.  He might have the best suggestions.

Remember the "Old man" character on the Caroll Burnette show that Tim Conway used to do? He didn't walk but "shuffled".Iwas like that for about 4 days after slipping on the icey sidewalk.I suggest taking Motrin Super or Aleave. I found they were better than the T3 perscription. After about a week you should still be using the doughnut but should be walking fine with only mild discomfort.By then you'll have prob downgraded to asprin or just grin and bear it.It'll take about 3-5 weeks before eveything is back to normal. ;D Hope You recover quick.

I broke that bone during the 4 hours in my life that I attempted snowboarding.

However, I was doing "Morning Glories" or bent over deltoid flys in the weight room last week. Direct opposite the tailbone is the real bone, if you get my drift.  When I straightened up, my arms were too tired to have good control of the weights.  Unfortunately, there had been 'packgae shifting' as well.

I crushed the end of the front bone between 35 pound dumbells.

<pause for you to recover from nausea waves>

Functionality was eventually restored and proven correct.  Lesson learned.

I will have to relate to this. I have fractured my left wrist on black ice on my dads birthday almost three years ago. I took NO painkillers, that the doctor had offered. and yes it hurt like hell nearly fainted in my car that the pain was so bad. so yes i do know how that would feel like.

Bach, i do hope you recover quickly.

Try having 4 Wisdom teeth extracted, 2 of which hooked and had to be dug out on no painkillers due to trying to impress the hot hygenist.  I shall likely never again know such pain as tears were rolling out of the corners of my eyes. :'(

It did work however and I got to date her  ;D......... well at least briefly....... ::)

*looks to the men oddly*

2 children, both born naturally.  Didn't have time to get an epidural both times.  Almost didn't get admitted the second time actually.  *gestures to FireSoul and Strafer*  They were more coherent at the time though, and probably have a better recollection.

Bach, just take it easy and hopefully it won't float where it isn't supposed to.

Allow me to relate a story on the J'inn theory of narcotics.

There I was.   Lying in the hopsital bed.   My appendix recently removed from my body because it didn't love me anymore.    I hurt.   Bad.

So I tell the nurse I hurt.   She says,  "We'll I can get you some tylyenol"   I say . . .    " TYLENYOL!!   I AIN'T GOT A HEAACHE HERE!!!  I want to be out cold, on Mars, LA LA LAND!!!"

Nurse:  Sir, we are really trying to avoid using narcotics unless absolutely necessary.

J'inn: IT'S ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!!!

Nurse: <sigh>   Okay, but you realize that Demorol has to be injected into the buttock.

J'inn:  <leans to one side, strips off sheet and lame hospital gown, points to naked arse>   FILL HER UP!!

Nurse:  Oh dear lord.

A few moments later I was happily dreaming about car accidents, drunken Exxon gas tanker drivers, and money.    <sniff>   I love those dreams.  <sniff>

So yes.   I'm a wimp when it comes to pain.  Or I just like that warm glow.    One or the other.  I'm not sure.    Well no, actually, I am sure.   Wimpy.   And proud of it.

DRUGS!!   Hand them over!!    <just watch Oxycotin,  it's dangerous>

We are WAY overdue for beers. I say we pretend to be watching football somewhere ( near a Metro stop?) on a Sunday.
