Pentium IV 4 ghz CANCELLED.
« on: October 15, 2004, 08:53:07 pm »
Seems that Intel can't live up to their promises.  AMD must be pushing them too fast.

Link to first story

Link to second story

Way back in the early days of the Pentium IV Intel was forecasting that the Pentium IV core would scale all the way up to 10 ghz.  Seems that they were a little overoptimistic.

For those that may think that I hate intel, I don't.  I just don't like to see any company dominate a field too strongly for too long.  It is always bad for the field and the customers (me).  I much prefer healthy competition.  Competition that is finally growing in the PC market.  Now I would like to see VIA and Transmeta grow up and be able to compete at the same level with AMD and Intel then things would be healthy in the CPU market place.

First off, I would never think that Of you nemesis, and I agree with your assesment.

I remember when the First stories came out about a 10 ghz chip, and I was pretty impressed, even as an AMD man.

I am saddened to hear this though, as I always want the Tech to push the Envelope.

Not to worry, the envelope will be pushed.  :)  It will just be a different envelope.  The Centrino branded laptops have shown that Intel can  make a CPU that is efficient per clock cycle and compete head to head with the best performing on the market.   I suspect however that Intel will take a good 2 to 3 years to get back on track.  Unless they have an alternate core in the wings that can take up where the P-IV leaves off, it will take time to design a successor from the ground up or do a major redesign of the P-IV to make it competitive again.

Intel laughed at the Athlon 64.  People don't want 64-bit (in the Intel world) yet.   Now the Intel chips are being made compatible withe the AMD 64 bit design.  They laughed again when AMD designed the Athlon 64 for dual core (actually multi-core) capability.  Now Intel is planning to go dual core themselves.

Intel set the standard (thanks to IBM choosing the 8088) but AMD is beginning to redefine it.

I read this and to a point I have to agree with them.  It's not all about the xhz.  I think they can get better performance from the chips by going to 64 bit or 128 bits.  Push the envelope that way.

On the other hand, exactly how fast do the cards need to flip when you're playing solitaire?

Depends how many copies you have open.

Seriously.

My youngest sister was playing solitaire once and complained to me about how slow the machine was getting.  I asked her how many copies she was running.  She insisted one but when I had her exit it she had another and another .... underneath.  Turned out every time she thought she was redealing she was opening another copy.   Poor machine was dieing from solitaire overload.

AMD is releasing new speed grades.  I haven't seen the official specs but it appears to be 0.2 ghz faster.  They have also released an Athlon 64 3700+ for laptops.

Quote
The chipmaker will unveil its Athlon 64 FX-55 chip next week

The chip is expected to be unveiled on Tuesday, along with the AMD Athlon 64 4000+,

Intel is also boosting the Pentium IV EE, while cancelling the Pentium IV 4ghz.

Quote
3.46GHz Extreme Edition chip next month as well.

The new version is only 0.06 ghz faster than the old one.  But it does have a faster frontside bus, 800mhz increased to 1066mhz and 2mb of L2 cache.   The cache will of course make the chip bigger, hotter and more expensive to make.
