Desperate call for help with windows XP
« on: October 05, 2004, 05:21:35 pm »
Could someone give me a hand or clue? I recently downloaded windows XP service pack 2 (home edition). After installing it, whenever you click and open any folder, in any directory for any reason XP attempts to install microsoft money 2002. I do have this program but never use it (it came with the computer). Installation starts but fails when it can't find the 2002 disk (which I have no idea where it is). If for some reason I need to look under my documents, or program files (which requires opening a folder and several subfolders) I can have 6-8 simultaneous installation attempts for money running at the same time; I literally can't cancel them fast enough.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

Oy, that is weird.
I'll be the first to raise the virus bogeyman...
Maybe try uninstalling sp2 and running the anti-virus as well.
Here is one of many online virus scanners:

Wish I could provide more help.

Can you remove The Program calls from the Registry? Or does It even show up IN the add remove Programs?

I would uninstall SP2 first,  run the regular Windows tools and antivirus, uninstall Money (and delete its directory folder) if you aren't using or planning to in the near future, and then try reinstalling SP2. I recently upgraded the desk PC here at the hotel with SP2 and it runs like a champ.

Also double-check your file associations in regards to MS Money. There's a chance that a file or two of yours may have gotten linked to Money inadvertantly. It should be under Folder Options.

Hope this helps,

I hate sp2!!!! I downloaded it and my computer slowed down to a crawl. Everything was working strangely. I uninstalled SP2 and then reloaded windows twice to get rid of it.

acually once SP2 is installed you cannot get rid of it completely only the item that appear in the add/remove programs ..... It is well known that SP2 is extreamly buggy (accually MS jumped the gun on this one and wasnt exactly completed at time of release) most people i know are not installing it due to the many bugs. Its better for now to keep it at SP1 and beef up your systems security with a firewall and AV software. i highly recomend ditching MS internet explorer for the likes of Mozilla

I'd try this first.

I'm running XP SP2 without issue, except that I can't figure out how to tell the firewall not to flip out when BF1942 tries to do a punkbuster authentication.   I registered the BF42 executable, but apparently PB is seperate.   Anyone know what it is?

Ok i hope this helps everyone with SP2, i am a computer engineer nad have done EXTENSIVE testing of the service pack its so full of problems its not worth installing. It will stop you from playing a multitude of online games including SFC3 and many others due to the new firewall, even if you disable it and turn it off it still wont allow comunications to the proper ports and i have seen the money problem. my sugestion is this format and reinstall windows and ONLY use the SP1.  Sorry to bear bad tidings but thats life in the Microsoft world.

There is a place in XPSP2 where you can check off to use the programs online go into your control panel and click on your firewall  and I believe it is in your advanced features.I would just look around.
