Dog advice??
« on: October 12, 2004, 01:56:44 pm »
I've got a 15 year old dog who has decided that potty training isn't something she is willing to adhere to anymore.  She pees everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE.  This is a problem that has been growing steadily over the years, but is now completely out of control.  What really has me worried is Saber- I don't want him picking up on this habit, if he hasn't already.
She can't even be left alone for 20 min anymore or she'll trot into one f the rooms in the house and pee and crap all over the place.  I have voiced my concern over this, and now the smell is starting to fill the house.  What's more, I've made suggestions that the damn dog either needs to be built a kennel outside and kept there from now on, or she needs to be locked up in the laundry room where she has enough room to move around, but there is no carpet for her to ruin.  At the very least I've made it clear that she can't be left alone for any period of time if she's in a carpeted area.
Any miracle advice?  Cuz it looks like that's what I need.
I swear, as much as I like Saber, if he starts peeing, he'll be back on a farm before you can say "have a nice life Saber."  The dog, I don't have a choice in, and it's starting to drive me up a wall.

But tell me, can you heal what father's done?
Or fix this hole in a mother's son?
Can you heal the broken worlds within?
Can you strip away so we may start again?
Tell me, can you heal what father's done?
Or cut this rope and let us run?
Just when all seems fine, and I'm pain free, you jab another pin,
Jab another pin in me

Take her to the vet.

It could be that she has an infection that's been building up over time and her age doesn't help her.

It could also be that she is marking her teritory or that she feels like she isn't getting enough attention.

As for Saber don't give up on him.  He's still young and is still trainable by you.

Age comes with a price . . .

Exactly what Alien said, At the Dog's age, It could very well be a Medical Problem, rather then a Situation where the Dog is just being honery.

We had a diabetic dachshund that peed on his blankets for a while before we realized he was diabetic.....he drank so much he couldn't help it.

Insulin shots helped for a year but then he finally got senile and started doing the same sort of thing.....he was always a lazy dog but he barely got up to take a crap towards the end.  We think he had a series of minor strokes.

It was my wife's dog....I probably would have put him down sooner.  His vision was bad (cataracts) and he got to the point where he would react strongly to any stimuli.....by trying to bite.  Not his fault.  He was just scared.

We steered the kids away until he had the final stroke one day.

Even then, my wife had to take him to the vet.

I never did like the dog much but he was a tough little guy.  Hung on to life as long as he could.

I dug him a good deep hole.

If you don't have much choice (and I sure didn't) I'd suggest laying the groundwork for the day the inevitable occurs.....so it's handled properly....and try and reach a mutual decision on the best way to deal with the problems until then.

For your carpets, I would suggest Nature's Miracle.  It's been a while since I've needed any and there may be a better product available today.  It's an activated enzyme solution that breaks down urine chemically.  It takes a few weeks but is pretty effective.

I saved a lot of things with it.......couch, car seat, rugs, bed (that was a bad dog day)........
