Hi Dizzy

Um, not exactly. I've tried to start with the SFB style of ship and the SSD layout; and then to update it to make it more TMP era. My original Lyrans (and my current Hydran's) are kitbashes of the Taldren models into more SFB style layouts. You can see this more clearly if you look top down onto the model and compare it to an SSD beside. These new ones are simply scratch builds that hopefully, when parked next to the TOS era ones say from Fleetdock 13, will simply look more modern and TMP era.

like so

When the Feral Yards are back up, most of my original Taldren Kitbashes for the Lyran and LDR will not be available. I've got them backed up so if people desperatly need them I still have them, but they wont be generally available. Eventually I'll get around to doing the same for my Gorn and Hydran's (I did say eventually :P )

Ok, I get it. Those designs are growing on me... like a fungus.

Only thing I dont like is how two dimensionsal you are making them. You have the top down look perfect, but from a perspective, dont you think the middle part could use a little 3D elevation? If thats where the bridge is, I'd expect, and like the look of it would it be built higher than the pontoons. Ya know? Whats ur take?

Well I've just followed the same design lineage as the originals which are pretty flat anyway. Just like the TMP Fed CA is fundementally the same shape as the orignal TOS version, I've tried to keep it similar that way. As for the whole bridge thing, its not like they look out of windows like modern day conventional ships, its all sensors etc displayed on view screens, so a low bridge I dont think would make that much difference. But hey, if people want it with the centre section raised feel free to do it, I don't mind, after all I just make the models I want :D

They make a lot more sense being flat, TMP Fed ships have a rather stupid design philosophy IMO - especially the raised bridge effectively a bulls-eye; Lyrans with their flat layout make a much smaller target profile especially when attacking (as they'd presumably be head on and so at their flatest angle).

The same is also true of the SFB Gorn ships and Thu11s versions - aside from the nacelles they're very flat and also quite thin in reality you'd want the most compact design possible ina combat situation but hey GR didn't really consider combat that much I suppose given the whole 'peaceful explorers' stuff.
If I determine the enemy's disposition of forces while I have no perceptible form, I can concentrate my forces while the enemy is fragmented. The pinnacle of military deployment approaches the formless: if it is formless, then the deepest spy cannot discern it, nor the wise make plans against it.

Fantastic Work Thu11s. I love your new Lyrans, they simply look like more interesting designs than the SFC ones, and are great intrepretations of the originals from sFB.

Though I wonder, what if for the scout version, you add small "TIE wings" onto the sides of the catamarans, just like the new Jedi Starfighters for Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

I think this would look kinda neat for a scout version, the wings being special sensors or something of the like. Also, maybe you could make Jedi SF based Lyran fighters, come to think of it. Their large catamarans (either w/ or w/o wings) seem to "suggest" possible Lyran counterparts. ;)
