I'll see your 4 cylinder dented commuter and raise you a 2 cylinder antique.  :)

Next week I shall be working on overhauling my mothers old machine (I took it in trade for my Athlon XP2400).  A PII 350mhz with a failing HD (30gb).  Attempting to get it into sufficiently good shape to pass on to a friend, he will likely pass it to his step daughter.  For a while though it will be running SETI here, first to get it "burned in" and fully tested then later waiting for him to be ready to take it.

Just built a P4 2.8GHZ hyperthreaded machine.  Has 1GB 400MHZ DDR RAM, 1MB Cache, and a GForce 5200 FX card with 256MB DDR.  Running everything on an Intel motherboard.  It's not a race car, but it's rock-solid performance wise.  Almost never crashes to desktop.

Main Machine

AMD Athlon 2400+ 2.0GHz Processor
512 MB RAM
two Western Digital 80 GB hard disks (C 5400 RPM, H (system drive) 7200 RPM)
integrated nVidia GeForce4 MX (pulls 64MB from system RAM for video, reducing effective total to 448)
Windows XP home
a.k.a. upgraded HP Pavilion 725n

Secondary

Intel Celeron 1.2GHz
512 MB RAM
30 GB hard disk (unknown brand, but the model numbers match the portable Hitachi I have in a see-thru case)
generic video, but luckily not Intel (w00t), supports two monitors, but only uses 16 MB RAM for video
Windows XP Home
a.k.a. Toshiba Satellite 1405-S151

ever since I reinstalled windows on the main machine I can't get windows networking to work.
I was never here, you were never here, this conversation never took place, and you most certainly did not see me.

Well "my" machine at home is as follows:

3.2 Ghz Prescott LGA 800 Mhz FSB Intel Processor
1 Gig of DDR2 533 Mhz RAM
X600 PCI-express ATI Video card
120 GB SATA 150 HD (boot)
80 GB SATA 150 HD (storage)
250 GB SATA HD (Video and Sound production)
120 GB USB2 Portabale ATA HD (Music Library)
19" Monitor.
Creative 5.1 Surround Speakers.

Other machines in the house are my wifes 1.333 Ghz Athalon workstation.  My storage server, 1.333 Ghz Athalon running Red Hat 9.0.  Old machine running older games and such P3 550 with the ATI all in wonder card so I can watch the game while at my computer.  Then we also have the 1.4 Ghz Intel Laptop for wireless computing and trips.

So for our Family of 2 we have five computers.... Hmmm... I guess I really am a geek.

I am excited now!!  On New Years Eve I give WillWeasel the remaining funds to get my new system rolling and completed.  Hopefully, within a week of doing so, I'll be driving a new computer.  And, as a side note, he bought another 256m stick of memory for this computer, so it should run better too!!
That means I will start 2005 with TWO systems!!  YAAAYYY!!!! (We really need a happy dance emoticon!!)
Then I will be playing the OP game online and blowing things up.  Most likely myself. ;D

My rig now includes an external USB2 Liteon DVD +/- RW Dual Layer capable burner.  Unfortunately the existing DVD drive can't read the resulting DVD RWs either + or - versions.  A Christmas gift.

Not really.  The DVD-Rom is really old.  I don't think that there were even specs out yet for DVD R let alone RW when I bought it.  Just like some very old CD-Roms won't read (most) CD-Rs and CD-RWs.  Now I have an excuse to upgrade.  :)  I still need to test the new drive on burning CD RWs, its supposed to do them but I haven't tried.

The only thing that I have used the DVD RW for so far is to back up my patch files - specifically the SFC patches.  All of them not just the current version.
