Karma ...
« on: September 24, 2004, 09:57:28 pm »
It is kinda silly, but so be it, it?s just a part of the forum software.

I pretty much ignored it ... but I've noticed a strange trend over the past few weeks.  People seem to care about it.

The straw came when a well known STFU member made a post in a thread about karma.  There were a good number of other posts by a bunch of other old names that have made similar comments that karma matters.

Should it be dropped?  Heck, can it be dropped?

A better question might be ... is it stifling comments that some would like to make?  Maybe that is for the better (keeps folks in check), but I don?t really think it is.

Sorry, just an opinion.

(I know, I know ? I should STFU)

[edit:  forgot to add "it" after ignored in line two]

Karma is weird.

I made the post about thread stars. Karma... I like it. Goes to show you how much you are hated and liked.

If anything gets dropped, should be thread star voting.

Actually, I believe they had a similar feature turned on at Taldren when they moved to the new Forum software a couple of years ago. David F, turned it off and said he did it because if was "divisive".

Personally it doesn't matter to me whether it's good Karma or bad Karma. It is the absolute value of the two that shows you are having an impact. lol

I especially like seeing my negative Karma go up by 1 right after disagreeing with someone in a thread, it is like they just admitted I had gotten to them and that is the best they got to refute my argument. hehehe.

Kroma,
PS, Come on Green you know you want to hit that - karma button now.  :P

Hoi Mace,

When you have made 50 posts, you will see a +karma (engage!) and a -karma (belay that!) under the Karma indicator. You are able, once you have made the 50 posts to give one point of each to a person once per day. You may hand out karma to everyone once per day to a max. of 1 of each type of Karma; to say it another way.

As far as I know there is no one take on what deserves karma of one type or another, nor is it possible to know which post it is that earned the karma.

Take care...to cross the river of samsara to the other side

I think a couple of more people have hit triple negatives now, MJ and TheJudge but they look at it as a badge of honor.  They're impacting people in order to get a response.

If a person doesn't post a topic or in a thread for fear of bad karma, then they have other issues that need to be resolved.

It only hurts if you take it as a personal insult.

Karma is probably a good pacifier for encouraging people to vote instead of spamming.  But, this daily karma voting routine can get tedious at times.  ;D

I am a pretty heavy Karma voter. Almost every thread I browse gets voted on. Sometimes, I just walk down the list voting randomly to get it over with.

Well, I kinda did. I watched my karma plumet, 1 point a day, for a good while. It's as if someone has a grudge against me and just won't let go. That chills me a bit considering how much time I spend working on this game for other people.

Personally, I would prefer the karma thing to go away.

I'd bag karma.  We all know who the A-holes are.  Frankly, I don't know how it is that I have any positive karma as I clearly have nothing but comtempt for you all. ;D

Since my post in this thread I got 2 -karma. WooHoo!! :D

Let's get some more, hehe.

I would keep karma as the "reality check" since I have faith there are more good-natured voters than vindictive ones. Or, mb I do need a reality check on that. *snicker*  But, empty out the karma totals periodically to stop any long-term trends of vindictiveness attacks by some people on others.  I'm sure that it's a simple SQL Delete call on the forum's back-end database.

I still have yet to give a positive or negative karma for precisely the reason stated by Kroma.

There are better ways to show your dissatisfation or agreement with someone.
