Agave and Scippy both lifelong friends of mine have this tradition of smacktalking when their favored teams Pittsburg and Miami clash, so I figured I'd get them to post it here so I wont miss one of my favorite events of the football season.

So guys go at it...... ;D

P.S.  My prediction is for a steel harpoon to embed itself in the Dolphins, Steelers by 10.

Wow, you really know how to kick a man when he's down, don't you?  You just wanted to rub in the opening of our fist losing season in............ in my lifetime.

Well, let's add up the bad and the good

We've got a coach hired by Jimmy <bastard> Johnson who was brught to the team fresh off of a 2-14 season.  Because, you know, you never can have enough coaches that know how to lose.  But at least he's not Jimmy <bastard> Johnson, so I guess at the time he was a step up.

Once you get past that, we've got a QB named Jay Fielder.  Oh wait, I meant Jay Fiedler.  <interception!>  No, I guess I did mean Fielder.  Well, at least Freely will start this week.  <interception!  interception!>  Umm.... nevermind.

Well, at least we've got a top-quality running back.  <puff puff pass..... puff puff pass....>  Oh, wait, no we don't.

But then again, we are only playing the Pittsburg Steelers.

I predict Miami wins by 6!  Olindo takes home the game ball.

Hey, thanks Chuut,

This game is gonna be a good one, for the Pittsburgh Steelers that is.   I was more than happy to see Miami on our schedule this year.   Easy win!!  Oh yeah, easy win!!

Poor Miami Dolphins are looking at a very bad season.  I predict they are gonna get "chewed up and spit out"  like a spoiled Mahi Mahi special at a cheap seaford dive.   Not only do they play in the tough AFC East (Jets, Patriots, Buffalo), they get Denver, and make a tour of the AFC North this year.   Granted, the AFC North is not a top division again yet, but I firmly believe that all 4 teams have enough juice to have a nice Fish snack this season.   Oh wait, Scipio, there is one ray of hope for you this season.   Your Fish get to play the NFC West (Seahawks, Cardinals, 49ers, Rams)  this year, the worst division by far.   You might actually win 3 of those games.

Ok, now a good look at the Dolphins.   The Fish are definitely got very few big name players left, those being Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas.  Two defensive players any team would like to have.   Olindo Mare, please, give my a break.   He's lucky that Miami exists, otherwise his career would have been over a long time ago.   Ricky Williams, my current choice for 2nd most bonehead NFL player ever.  (#1 - Cary Collins)  Williams is being told now that he has to give back some of this "entertainment" money.   8.6 Million to be exact.   Behind him, your biggest name offensive players are Chris Chambers(WR), Travis Minor (RB), and Larmar Gordon(RB).   Minor is your only real name at RB now, as 3 of 6 RB are hurt and unable to play.(that include Gordon)

Ok, on to the fabled black and gold of the Steelers.    Oh where to start?   Running backs.  The trio of Staley, Bettis (ole Fat ass as my friends call him), and Haynes will have a field day with the refocused running game of the Steelers.    Quarterback.   No Tommy Maddox starting his Sunday.   "Big Ben" Roethlisberger will be starting, our #1 draft pick from Miami-OH last year.  I can't think of a better game for him to be starting.  He will have his rookie mistakes, but the good will overcome the bad.  Add in here his great receiving core of Burress, Ward, Randle El, and Riemersma(TE).

Final Conclusion:

Steelers - 250+ passing yards, 200+ running yards

PITTSBURGH STEELERS BY 20!!

The only real hope of the Dolphins vs the Steelers is hurricane Jeanne.   If she takes a more Westerly course, the winds may be bad enough to them to postpone the game to Monday or Tuesday.   After that, the only way this game could be more humiliating for the Fish would be if the Steelers brought Bubby Brister back and then wore their "Super X" throw-back jerseys.    Hell, even then, Steelers would still win by 10 pts.

No, Chuut, Bubby Brister doesn't make the top bonehead players.   You can't blame a guy from being born that way.

Now, he does make the #1 choice for two categories.

#1 - NFL player I would never, ever wanted to see play more than one game as a Steeler.

#1 - Good comeback to shut up a rowdy Steeler's fan. (As you proved at last Steeler/Panthers game.)  I was very specific to mention him and our Super X" throw-back jersey before you or anyone else did.

Hey Bearslayer.  Glad to hear there is another Steelers fan in our community.   I do live in Charlotte, NC, but I am in good company.   There are LOTS of Steelers fans here.   I could name five different restaurants down here that are filled with ravenous fans wearing black and gold every weekend.   It's almost funny to see the conversion of Charlotte from ACC basketball town to thinking it is a NFL football town.   I still get pissed off when 1/3 of the fans leave early to "beat traffic".  Ya know, you aren't beating traffic if you are leaving when 20 thousand others do as well.   Yeesh!!

I predict Miami wins by 6!  Olindo takes home the game ball.

-S'Cipio

Well even should he earn it, I would bet on him dropping it at least twice on the way home, given the showing last season of ball dropping by the Miami recievers..... ;D

Olindo is the kicker, Chuut, he doesn't drop passes.  I'm granting him the game ball and a final score divisible by 3 for two reasons:

1) My complete lack of faith in Miami's offense to punch one through to the endzone
2) My complete lack of faith in the Steelers ability to do anything!

I mean, come on!  Look at what Agave if basing his hopes on:

Quote
Ok, on to the fabled black and gold of the Steelers.    Oh where to start?   Running backs.  The trio of Staley, Bettis (ole Fat ass as my friends call him), and Haynes will have a field day with the refocused running game of the Steelers.

Bettis is ole Fat ass?  Well, old and fat, sure.  But I'd stop at calling him an ass.  Still, old and fat is enough to count him out. As for the other two...... forget it.  The one thing Miami still has is a defense against the run.  Your old fat guys aren't going anywhere.

Quote
Quarterback.   No Tommy Maddox starting his Sunday.   "Big Ben" Roethlisberger will be starting, our #1 draft pick from Miami-OH last year.  I can't think of a better game for him to be starting.  He will have his rookie mistakes, but the good will overcome the bad.

Rookie mistakes is all it's going to take to kill him.  You don't really want to be putting a rookie up against the No. 1 rated defense in the NFL.  You mentioned Zach Thomas.  Expect "Big Ben" to mention him a lot more in his the post-game shame-faced inquisition.

Quote
Add in here his great receiving core of Burress, Ward, Randle El, and Riemersma(TE).

They only play when they quarterback gets rid of the ball.  I'll keep a tally sheet.  I don't expect to tally often.

Hahahahaha.

Scipio, you've got no frickin clue.   Fish dinner coming right up.

Oh, and for the record.  I don't call Bettis "ole fat ass", Chris and David call him that since The Bus went rumbling all over the Panther's defense in a late season snow game a couple of years ago.   Hehehehe.  What a great game that was!!   Well, the second half anyway.

You mentioned the Dolphins rush defense.   You might want to check your facts.   They are currently ranked 28th in rush defense.  Whoops.

By the way, Scipio ole pal, the game has now been postponed to 8:30 PM Sunday night because of hurricane.   That frickin sucks.   It was gonna be the game CBS was to show at 1:00 PM.   Now, I doubt it will even be televised on regular cable.   Oh well, I don't have to be watching the game to know how they are going to abuse the Fish.

GO STEELERS!!!

Then he should start at wide reciever given your other "talent" at that position.... ;D

I'd still give it to the Steelers, after all they only have to go back to the late 70's early 80's to relive their glory days, so are much more in touch with the present than the Dolphins......... ;D

I mean its the modern era now and Miami can't even find their own website, some problem about putting 3 "W"s together in a row.......  ;)

My prediction is that it wont take long for Lepton to find this post, report it and get it moved...

My Cowboys lost. ::sniff:: They owned the 1st half then they freaking fell apart like a bad suit in the rain second half. WTF is wrong with them? They remind me of the Spurs last season vs the Lakers.

My Cowboys lost. ::sniff::

The only good part of this whole thread!

Sorry Dizz, but misery loves company.

And no, sorry, this does not break Miami's record.  The Pats unbeaten streak crosses over two seasons, giving them a whole off-season for them to freshen up, plug wholes in their lineup, and face opponents (like Miami) who have had sudden wholes appear in their lineup during the offseason.

They are still doing a fantastic job as a franchise.  If they make it back to the superbowl, I'll be pulling for them.  They are not, however, one squad of guys doing an entire season unbeaten.  At least not yet.  Talk to me in November and maybe I'll have something to worry about.

In the meantime, I'll just worry about another "perfect" season by the weakened Dolphins.  (Just not perfect in the way that I'd like this time.....)

Here is an interesting article from last year for ya Scippy....... ;)

Quote
Undefeated Dolphins nowhere near perfect
  Wednesday, November 19th, 2003

 By Jim Margalus

The Chiefs lost their first game of the season last week, leaving a total of zero undefeated teams in the NFL this year.
As usual, the members of the 1972 Miami Dolphins, the only team to go undefeated through an NFL season, held a champagne toast to commemorate their uniqueness, and in the process made themselves a great example of bad sportsmanship once more.

For some reason, sportscasters adore the idea of the likes of Bob Griese, Larry Csonka and Paul Warfield celebrating both their achievement and the failure of others. Perhaps there?s something attractive about watching grown men reveal their insecurities.

There is no need to revel in the failure of another team, and certainly no need to put a hex on teams trying to climb that mountain, like they did with the 1985 Bears - especially for a record that can?t even be broken.

The Dolphins went 17-0 that year ? 14-0 through the regular season, plus three post-season wins. An undefeated team would win 19 games due to two extra games during the regular season.

But numbers are not what is at stake here. The Dolphins were undefeated - they?ve been remembered for that ever since, and they will be remembered for that for years to come. Undefeated is enough, and the number of wins is a mere formality.

Whether another team wins every game does nothing to hurt that Dolphins team?s image. But perhaps those Dolphins are scared of being the worst undefeated team in NFL history, should another team duplicate that achievement.

Miami that year had two 1,000-yard rushers in Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris and a bunch of other memorable players, but what else did they have going for them?

Only the easiest schedule in the NFL. The Dolphins? combined schedule amounted to 70-122-4. That means the Dolphins? average opponent won only 5 games that year during the regular season, which is not a gauntlet by any means.

Bill Walsh and Joe Montana fell one game short of perfection in 1984.
Even with the great amount of parity yielding pretty mediocre teams these days, a schedule-maker would be hard-pressed to create one as easy as that. The Dolphins would have practically been a disappointment had they lost even one or two games that year.

The 1984 San Francisco 49ers and those ?85 Bears capped off their one-loss seasons with Sherman-esque marches through the playoffs and dominating wins in the Super Bowl. The Dolphins beat the Washington Redskins 14-7 in Super Bowl VII, with the most memorable play being Miami kicker Garo Yepremian?s pathetic empty-handed ?pass? right into Washington?s Mike Bass? arms, which Bass returned for the lone Redskins score.

So perhaps the 1972 Dolphins know deep down in the cockles of their hearts that they had it easy that year, and any future team that finished the season undefeated would do it under assumably more difficult circumstances.

Walter Payton is greater than Emmitt Smith, despite what the numbers may say.
Either way, you didn?t hear about the family of Roger Maris celebrating every year somebody fell short of his mark of 60 homers that he set in 1960. Maris played in a live-ball era with a left-handed swing that was tailor-made for the short right-field porch in Yankee Stadium, giving him an advantage like the Dolphins had with their schedule.

Connie Payton didn?t call Emmitt Smith?s house early in the morning before game days trying to keep him from running his best and breaking
her husband Walter?s rushing record.

With Maris and Payton (and for a very short period Mark McGwire), they had shatterable records ? numbers that could be surpassed, resulting possibly in a life of obscurity for the once-record holder. This isn?t possible with the Dolphins. Their record is an idea instead of a number, and that idea can't be surpassed unless a team somehow had minus-one in the loss column. Even David Stern couldn?t give that to the Los Angeles Lakers.

There's a reason Garo's mishap was the only memorable thing about Super Bowl VII.
Even though the stakes are much higher when a number is in question, being No. 2 doesn?t tarnish an image. Smith now has the most rushing yards in NFL history, and still Payton, Jim Brown and Barry Sanders are considered better running backs by basically everybody. Hank Aaron has 41 more homers in his lifetime than Babe Ruth, but most would consider Ruth the premier power hitter in the game.

History is kind to those who set records, even if they don?t last, and the 1972 Dolphins should have realized this by now. They played the perfect season, which is as admirable a feat as any in sports. Chances are they won?t have much company, if any.

The Dolphins may never see it this way, and every year they?ll continue to make fools of themselves. The last team will fall from the ranks of the unbeaten, the champagne glasses will clink, and those Dolphins will show how men who never lost can still be such big losers.

For your reference, I am not referring to Miami having lost their distinction as the only undefeated-in-a-season team tag.

I am talking about the fact that Miami, like 4 other teams, had the record of longest winning streak that spans 2 seasons.  As of the start of this season, the record was 18 games.
The '72-'73 Fish were Miami's representation to this 4-team club.  Obviously, Miami went 17-0, then went 1-1 to start '73.  Looks like those skilled Fish (please see Chuut's post about exactly how skilled they are, I believe he said the '72 fish's "strength of schedule" was 5-9 / 5-10 teams...) spent enough time retooling to handle the obviously stronger post-super bowl schedule... :D
Meanwhile, the Pats took their retooling seriously.  Facing the typical post-super-bowl strong schedule, in what is supposedly one of the toughest divisions in football, the Pats have accumulated a post-retool 4-0 record to go with their 15 game streak from the end of last season.  And, like every NFL team, we don't have our opening day lineup.  Especially in the WR department...
Come to think of it, I think all of the other teams with 18-game streaks (Denver, Chicago and someone else) had longer second-season post-super-bowl streaks than Miami's "power" team did.

They are still doing a fantastic job as a franchise.  If they make it back to the superbowl, I'll be pulling for them.  They are not, however, one squad of guys doing an entire season unbeaten.  At least not yet.  Talk to me in November and maybe I'll have something to worry about.

I'm hoping the Pats get through next week's Seahawks then the Jets the week after.  That will be the best indication of whether the Pats can join Miami this year, or are your boys still the luckiest boys in the NFL... ;)

My word, what a lot of sour grapes.  Mr. Margalas must have to sleep standing up, to keep all that bile from backing into his esophagus and giving him a nasty burning throat.

He also seems to come from a very negative viewpoint:  that, today's athletes have to face conditions so much more difficult and it is unlikely anyone will ever have a perfect season again.  He forgets that today's athletes face more difficult opposition, but are also themselves much more powerful and efficient.  I believe that there *will* be another perfect season.  And when there is, the newer team will have bragging rights in that their season is longer.

I only hope that Miami clears itself of the last of Jimmy Johnson's foul stench on their great name -- by ditching Wannstedt -- in time for them to have a shot at being the second team to claim a perfect season.

I screamed at Huzienga over and over again that hiring Jimmy Johnson was a mistake.  But did Wayne listen to me?  No!  He chose to remain deaf to the sounds bouncing off of my TV screen.

Oh, OK then.  My mistake.  I wasn't even cognizant of a two season streak being kept up with as a record.  In that case, congrats to New England for holding the longest two-season winning streak. Losing to the Dolphins when they face them a second time on December 20 would be a great late birthday present to me.  Until then, however, I don't even mind if they extend their streak with a few more games.

Now considering the Dolphins played in the superbowl the year before losing to the Dallas Cowboys 24 - 3 this is an incredibly easy schedule, one that will likely never be duplicated in the era of salary caps and free agency.  This is not to say that Miami's feat in 1972 was not a great one, just that it is one of the most overrated ones.

He speaks the truth, my fair kitty...

Both teams claim to represent "America", and both teams got to the top through the same method, specifically the wanton spending of money.
Too bad the Cowboys can't use that trick anymore, with that salary cap and all...  Steinbrenner's just being forced to spend more $$$ than before, in luxury tax.  Obviously,  it is a cost he has passed down to the end customer (who, being in NY, can afford those outrageous prices...)
