im not WZ or LS but ill tell u what i used to do.

i woudl take one segment and draw that sucker buy hand using circular guide lines in a seperate layer (photoshop)

it owudl take probabtl 30 misn to an hour depending on detail level.

some segments woudl need to be customized, for example the NX1 sections around the back of the saucer where the impulse engines are.

do not be afraid to draw these buy hand!!!

Try snagging a photoshop/PSP plugin called "mura's meister pole transform". Just make a basic set of aztecs, then use the plugin - instant saucer in practically no time. The trick is getting the basic pattern, but after that it's fairly easy.

Also, to do weathered panels, I usually airbrush the weathering onto a blank layer and then blur, darken, and modify it accordingly.

It is easy, actually. What takes time and a lot of headaches is getting the pattern and polar settings just right for the particular ship you're working on. Here's a few examples of what I mean by 'basic pattern':

It's the un-circle-ified version of the saucer aztec and increasing the amount of segments and the size of the map influence the final saucer appearance. Like most things, it takes some tinkering and a slight bit of luck to get what you're going for but it is easy once you get the hang of it. Ironically, I originally made the Connie aztecs for the Valiant, not the Enterprise.

well the thing is im a hand painter. i like to do things by hand because i can control the events more evenly.

WZ method works tho i have done that also. however after i started messing with guides in photoshop i found that even tho its more time consuming i could make some very customized patterns for most any vessel.

same for weathering, i like to put a white layer on multiply over my entire oibject, then use a burn tool from photoshop 7 or CS and set the brush up for randomized and scattered angle. then i can paint some kick ass dirt and rust and wear and tear. and use a white paint or marqee to clear out sections i dont want dirt in, also locking the layer, setting the background color to white and lightly earsing the area where u burned really gives a convincing effect.
