I bumped into a couple of players tonigh who misunderstood the rule on leaders.

Remember, you can only have ONE LEADER in your flotilla, NOT one of each type of leader.  (Some races only have one type of leader, and the ability to take one of each type would be very unfair to them.)

The only exception, as listed in the rules, is interceptor leaders.  You make take more than one leader only if BOTH of them are interceptor leaders.

The idea is nudge flotillas into historical compositions as a natural consequence of the shipyard, without making a lot of rules that have to be remembered. Thus you get one leader, one support PF, and the rest are the line PF's you buy in the supply screen.

I guess I was violating the rules too.  Ooops.  Here's why.

One leader plus his two equals three.

One support ship that doesnt carry help equals four.

I think I just expected that trying to get a flotilla of six would be the norm.

Now I think the only way to do that (have a 6 ship flotilla) is to buy two interceptor leaders, and the four 'wingmen' from the supply screen.  You could 'upgun' and buy the good leader, but then you are limited to four ships total.

Is all of the above correct?

You are all correct there, Villa.  Yes, the model was a Taldren flotilla of four rather than an SFB flotilla of six. 

There are lots of options for modeling a flotilla, and in the future -- if I run something with this concept again -- I may give you the option of more boats.  However for the first time out, I wasn't sure how well people would handle the need to jump between that many boats.  This was especially true for the fighter races who wouldn't be used to it, and the Lyrans, whom I felt neede a numerical superiority since they lack the heavy seeking weapons the other races have.  So I decided to keep things a little smaller.

So it seems you are for the most part limited to one flotilla as you can't buy more line ships in the shipyard to go along with your one leader...at least I have not seen any line ships in the yards, only leaders, thus as a Hydran I'm limited to 3 ships.

No.  Like the other races, you have access to the support boats.  Apart from the three PF leaders you get to choose between, you can also get one of:

PFm  mine warfare PF
PFm+  mine warfare PF
VLK  Fi-Con
VLK+ Fi-Con
PFs  scout PF
PFs+ Scout PF


This brings your total number of ships in your squadron to four.
