Optical Camouflage!

What is Optical Camouflage?

Optical camouflage is a kind of active camouflage.

This idea is very simple. If you project background image onto the masked object, you can observe the masked object just as if it were virtually transparent.

This shows the principle of the optical camouflage using X'tal Vision. You can select camouflaged object to cover with retroreflector. Moreover, to project a stereoscopic image, the observer looks at the masking object more transparent.

Optical camouflage can be applied for a real scene. In the case of a real scene, a photograph of the scene is taken from the operator?fs viewpoint, and this photograph is projected to exactly the same place as the original. Actually, applying HMP-based optical camouflage to a real scene requires image-based rendering techniques.

They already apply this technology to the current generation UAV's. Thing is when you wanna hide a small plane in broad daylight you slap a bunch of low-power LED lights on the outer skin. Combined with a computer and light sensors that match the background sky color and intensity...the damn things are pert near invisible.

The problem for the military has always been creating low-observable technology that has a high performance envelope. Won't do much good if it can withstand the heat from friction if an aircraft is breaking the sound barrier. Extremes from cold to very hot to very cold again. G forces, and heck good old fashioned battle damage.

Not to mention the fact that most soldiers tend to look down at the buck rogers crap. I don't blame em, if it means I have to haul around another 20 pounds of gear I might just say f*ck  it, gimme the cammo paint :)
