giving orders to ships you are not conning
« on: September 17, 2004, 09:02:57 am »
I havent played for a couple of years, and just found the cds of EAW and OP.  I know there is a way to give orders to the ships to attack targets, but I cant figure out how to....

for example:

say I have 3 ships on a convy raid mission, how do I instruct my wingmen to go after the freighters whil I 'distract' (i.e. blow up) the escort?

A few ways to do this.

First is to attack the target yourself with your fleet wing on "match my target" orders.  They will attack your current select target.

If you want more control, use "fire on my command" in the fleet control panel and click the fire now button when you have them in arc.

Fighters and PFs are generally the same way, except you use the shuttlebay panel to issue commands to them.

The fleet control panel is the button with two overhead ship silhouettes.  As far as I know, you can't shortcut key it.

If you want them attacking something other than what your attacking, i'd probably target the desired ship, select 'match my target,' wait until they actually engage that target, then set them to 'fire at will' and leave them to it.  It'll give a spotty performance, but it has a chance of working.

I would luve to see the answer.  back in SFC1 you could do this easily.  But some genius in Taldren thought they had a better way.

One tip I can give you since i am playing asingle player version right now is to strip out shuttle from ships you don't intend to fly or con so they do not through out a ww .  You should do this if you intend a mid to high speed attack.

However you might want to starcastle or "creep"...a good tactic for Feds and Gorns (exept vs online players) so you shpul;d max out your shuttles and have a few ww ready.

Also I do not think the Overload button works so you must manually set overloads ship to ship, mount by mount.

I found that some things you set will get overridden by the AI when you leave the ship and some things don't.  I dont have a list of what gets changed and what don't but I think overloads will stay the way you set it.  One thing i would experiment with are the energy pririty settings.

I find only one problem when there are allied ships but not under your command. That is if you want to capture a ship they just keep on attacking it.These are of course AI controled  ships. There is no way to give them orders to capture a ship. This does work in SFC3 though but not in SFC2.

its a wast of men and time to capture a ship cause you can't use it cause of the damage, it will take too long to fix all the damage you amde to it (mostly the shield) and when you wont you wont have a bonus in prestige point and you cant keep the ship and you wont have it aivalable later to buy it, if it was possible it would be fun to capture a klingon D7 battle cruiser and use it again them :)

as for giving order to other ship in you fleet well its hard to make them to shoot the ship you want them to attack, sometime the seem to play around, must be a bad commanding officer on these ship :)

in eaw in the mission promise to keep its hard when you have more that 1 ship cause the have the abit of ben too far from you and get blow up by the mine field, with 2 ship well you have to be over the cargo ship so the 2 ship will be protected by the cargo ship. and protecting the cargo ship can be hard if you don't have drone to shoot the ship that have plasma weapon.
