Squadron Commander: BACK UP!!
« on: September 16, 2004, 07:08:10 pm »
Hi, all:

Sorry to be silent all day.  Work had me out on the road.  It's a good thing Gorn don't sweat, or I'd have been sweating like a human.

Anwyway, I saw that lots of people posted thinking the server was down, or that they were having connection difficulty.   In fact the server never went down today at all, but apparently my ISP connection was crap. I suspect there were things still fubarred from their outage yesterday.   I couldn't even load a web page when I got home.  The server was still connected to it, but I could see people timing out trying to connect.

I've spent the last forty minutes on the phone with my cable company.  They played musak, read some concise scripts, and did a lot of <insert God knows what here>.

My connection *SEEMS* to be strong now.  Please log on and give it a try.  It shouldn't need a cleaning yet, but if people still find movement slow I'll clean it later tonight.

Of course, the first thing any tech support guy has you do is disconnect your router.  <hmmph!>.  See how it does now.  If it does well, I'll reconnect my router when I clean the DB and we'll see how that goes.  If my router is messing things up  I may forgo it and see if I can play from my fiance's house.

<SLAP!>

Oww!  What was that for?

PS:  I'll be out for a couple of hours.  I'll check back to see how things are going when I return.

What router do you have?  (Linksys has updated their fimware multiple times this summer on some models, particularly DHCP stability on the earlier versions of the BEFSR series). Watch out for DHCP servers that will only allow connection from one MAC address (use the MAC address clone feature of your router if it has one if necessary)

Tell your tech support guy that your router is a PC with two ethernet adapters running embedded Linux or VxWorks... ;) (I've gotten proper support by telling this little white lie sometimes...though I now have an ISP that supports and encourages routers)

I was never here, you were never here, this conversation never took place, and you most certainly did not see me.

It's a LINKSYS BEFSR41.  Looking at your note, perhaps I need to check into updating the firmware.  I still think the problem was on their end today during the first outtag, but there is no point in leaving a possible second fault running around.  (The second outage was a blue screen of death on my end while I was out.  Sorry!)

I'll try it this weekend.  Right now I want to leave the server alone and let it run for a while so people have some uninterrupted time to play.

Who is your ISP?  They sound cool.  My tech support always sounds like bored teenagers reading a prepared script in monotone.

Which version of the BEFSR41? (check the sticker on the bottom). MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT FIRMWARE FOR YOUR ROUTER VERSION.

V3 firmware (1.05.00):  http://www.linksys.com/download/firmware.asp?fwid=183
<V3 firmware (1.46.2): http://www.linksys.com/download/firmware.asp?fwid=3

There have been many fixes to the V2 BEFSR41 firmware in the last year - many critical. The update takes but a moment.

http://www.eastlink.ca/  On the leading edge of cable internet service provision for the last ten years. Originally I had service from Dartmouth cable "Access Cable" which then took the "Wave" moniker... and was finally aquired by Eastlink, who implemented the Access network style on their own.  A few years back I was dissatisfied with Rogers cable in Ontario (was using the @home service), when a fibre cut in Buffalo disconnected me from my e-mail server, I called them up, cancelled my account and told them to talk to Darmouth Cable people to learn how to build a quality network of their own. A year later they did, and I signed up again. The best service I ever had was with the original Darmouth cable though, a 5Mbit down (and up!!!) shell account... drool.... sigh, the good ol days. I am still very happy with eastlink though, the support is quality, I like how they don't treat you like an idiot and trust you to configure your own network properly. (currently giving 5Mbit down and ~600kbit up on a 48hr DHCP lease)

P.S. Another good trick is to find the lan IP of your cable modem so you can monitor signal quality. e.g.:  http://192.168.100.1/ for the Motorola Surfboard 5100
