PARTITION MAGIC IS DRIVIN' ME CRAZY!!!
« on: September 11, 2004, 01:08:09 pm »
I have one partition that is almost full and another that's largely empty so I figured that I'd get the free demo version of Partition Magic to do the job of resizing my partitions since I'm not in a position of purchasing the full version right now. Now that I got it downloaded and installed, I can't get it to do any darn thing! :banghead: I select "resize partition", enter in the desired parameters, click "Apply Changes", and nothin' happens! Even after I reboot I see no change. Does this program actually do anything or am I just missin' something? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated :notworthy:

I guess my question is, why are partitioning your HD...2.  Why not just move the innocuus data over to the unused partition and re-link...

Partition Magic is $70...a new 40 Gig HD is less than that...add a new HD when you can afford it

My primary HD, a 40 gig Western Digital, is breakin' down so I had to resort to my 20 gig spare. The drive is split 50/50 between two partitions. My C: drive is almost full while my data partition is mostly unused. I just got finished installing the OS and updates as well as a few programs so I'm not really up to formatting everything and starting all over again in order to repartition. The new hard drive is going to have to wait 'till Hurricane Ivan blows by.

According to this site the demo is non-functioning.  I've got the real version and have never had a problem with it.

I guess it's like going to a strip joint, you can look but you can't do anything. :)

I can't believe Partition Magic did something like that, it's like "Oh see our pretty interface, you can look but if you want to use it you better pay up".  I did a quick search on the net (only had limited time though) and I only found one other share-ware program that partitions hard drives.  And their demo was the same way.   ::)  IMHO I would reformat the hard drive and not partition it since it is only a 20Gb hard drive anyway.  You could also move and re-link the non-operating system programs as Capt. Mike suggested or just uninstall and reinstall the programs to the data partition although that can make a mess out of the registry.  Then it would be just a matter of moving your word, music, and picture files over to the data drive.  Good luck either way, sorry I could not be any more help.

Non-functioning demo, eh? What a crock ::) Thanks fer the help anyways, guys. I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and repartition the hard way if I wanna fit in all my programs :banghead:

LeRoy, I don't know where you live, but in today's Sunday paper flyers, Circuity City, Best Buy, Staples, Officemax, CompUSA, all have ads for oodles of computer components.  At least two of those guys are sporting HD sales on their flyers.

I have had good experiences, in terms of quality, customer service, shipping, prices, and selection with NewEgg (www.newegg.com) and often, though not always, they have some decent prices on all sorts of hardware and software.

I have had one experience, and it was good, with eWiz (www. ewiz.com).  ZipZoomFly (formerly Googlegear) is also a good, reputable, and fairly decently-priced site (www.zipzoomfly.com).

I'd really recommend that you either replace that 20 with a (much) larger drive or back it up with a biggie.

I have a 15 Gb drive, but it is on an oldie machine that my kid plays (literally) with... and HE has stuffed it full of stuff.

i don't know if the think that you will buy the software since the demo is not working but a none working demo is useless, that remind me of a sotware that remove junk leave but software after you uninstall it, you can use it but can't save the cleaning of your hd, or a game demo that can't be play with, or some demo that you must buy, i will not buy a demo, i want a demo so i can see if i like the game, mostly when the sell it at $30 usd and stuck with it since you cant return it since you have open it, ask a friend or try to have it used, well i don't have friend close and sure a used game is less that a brand new but i will still need to buy it, how can i be interested in buying a game if there no wya i can try it first and see if i like it?.

I have and use partition magic - and the behavior you are experiencing can happen even with a fully functioning copy.  In order for the software to do things with a partition, there has to be sufficient free space on the partition for it to work with.  You may have to move some files off the partition in order to get it to work.

That said, I would do a backup first.  I've only seen this happen twice - but I have seen partition magic hose a partition - losing all data on it.
