Virus or KBF sabotage??
« on: September 11, 2004, 09:48:41 pm »
Hey all
Noticed today after I got home from work that every website I visit that I'm normally "signed in" I wasn't.
I had to remember like 30 passwords to get everything signed back on.
(Actually I stayed signed into bozobits)
Even when I went to hotmail I had to re enter the email addy. Normally I just have to enter a password.

I then went to grab adaware to see if something was on my system, and got a message saying
This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT Authority\system.
(or something like that)
And the sytem shut down.
Figured I must have a virus somehow.
Ran AVG's free scan thingy and "Trend Micros" free scanner and both came up with nothing.
I'm now downloading SP2 to intall it,and don't seem to have any problems, but anyone have any ideas what might be going on?

This forum,
KOTH's,
Battleclinic,
sfc2.net
SOV,
GZ

Minor nuisance.  AV found nothing.

No idea what caused it.

Hmmm, what porn sites do you all have in common?
Good place to start....

Seriously, do you run Ad-Aware? Did you delete the "negligible threats"? I believe the cookies that save your passwords may be included in there.

HAdn't actually run adaware or spybot.
Problem happened when I was trying to run adaware for the first time, kept getting the message and shutting down.
Finally disconnected from the internet, ran spybot first, fixed some stuff, then ran adaware again.
Fixed some more stuff.
Hopefully it was just some crazy spyware that's gone now.
Of course spybot keeps telling me it's ofund and fixed "5 dso exploits" every time I run it.
Grrrr

Oh well everything else is updated, hopefully dso exploits aren't that bad.

Yes I suppose it would spare your fleet's long-overdue (should that be hyphenated? Probably not) humiliation at
my hands on KCW.

.... Actually that gives me an idea...

That is one of the symptoms of MSblast worm. Allthough XP has long had a patch for it.

But just in case here is a link for the patch. http://www.download.com/3302-2092_4-10219739.html?pn=2&fb=0

Any up to date antivirus should catch it, assuming it has enough time to run w/o computer shutting down 1st.
Somewhere north of the Azores.

I found this on a brand new PC - well brand new except that the guys who built it had connected it to their network. It kept shutting down as soon as AdAware was started. Booting into safe mode and Running AdAware wiped about 20 nasties off the PC. Followed up with Spybot and found no further problems. Normal mode then works fine. My assumption was that one of the nasties was designed to prevent AdAware removing.

Not sure I can be bothered, but as you are the Doc, can you run an AI standard patrol in 2 minutes in a KRC? If so, there is no problem and I am utterly wrong. If you cannot, then the KRC is a worse ship for AI missions than ones I know can.

Don't even think of it Hexx.  I have real good antivirus software, you'll just be wasting your time.

ahhh madelf, madelf.

While I truly do apprciate the thought that I would have absolutley any idea on how to create and/or send you a virus
the truth is computers and me really aren't all that friendly.

I actually meant that if somehow I actually start to lose a game, I can just say "oops the virus is back" and crash out..

I mean that would be chaeting, and I'd never ever do it.
