Hurricane Preparations (a must read for Floridians!)
« on: September 08, 2004, 11:55:23 am »
As you now well know, we are in the peak of the hurricane season. Any day now, you're going to turn on the TV and see a weather person pointing to some radar blob out in the Atlantic Ocean and making two basic meteorological points.
(1) There is no need to panic.
(2) We could all be killed.

Yes, hurricane season is an exciting time to be in Florida. If you're new to the area, you're probably wondering what you need to do to prepare for the possibility that we'll get hit by "the big one." Based on our insurance industry experiences, we recommend that you follow this simple three-step hurricane preparedness plan:

STEP 1: Buy enough food and bottled water to last your family for at least three days.
STEP 2: Put these supplies into your car.
STEP 3: Drive to Nebraska and remain there until Halloween.

Unfortunately, statistics show that most people will not follow this sensible plan. Most people will foolishly stay here in Florida.

We'll start with one of the most important hurricane preparedness items:
HOMEOWNERS' INSURANCE: If you own a home, you must have hurricane insurance. Fortunately, this insurance is cheap and easy to get, as long as your home meets two basic requirements:
(1) It is reasonably well-built, and
(2) It is located in Wisconsin

Unfortunately, if your home is located in Florida, or any other area that might actually be hit by a hurricane, most insurance companies would prefer not to sell you hurricane insurance, because then they might be required to pay YOU money, and that is certainly not why they got into the insurance business in the first place. So you'll have to scrounge around for an insurance company, which will charge you an annual premium roughly equal to the replacement value of your house. At any moment, this company can drop you like used dental floss.

SHUTTERS: Your house should have hurricane shutters on all the windows, all the doors, There are several types of shutters, with advantages and disadvantages:
Plywood shutters: The advantage is that, because you make them yourself, they're cheap.
Sheet-metal shutters: The advantage is that these work well, once you get them all up. The disadvantage is that once you get them all up, your hands will be useless bleeding stumps, and it will be December.
Roll-down shutters: The advantages are that they're very easy to use, and will definitely protect your house. The disadvantage is that you will have to sell your house to pay for them.
Hurricane-proof windows: These are the newest wrinkle in hurricane protection. They look like ordinary windows, but they can withstand hurricane winds! You can be sure of this, because the salesman says so. He lives in Nebraska.

Hurricane Proofing your property: As the hurricane approaches, check your yard for movable objects like barbecue grills, planters, patio furniture, visiting relatives, etc... You should, as a precaution, throw these items into your swimming pool (if you don't have a swimming pool, you should have one built immediately). Otherwise, the hurricane winds will turn these objects into deadly missiles.

EVACUATION ROUTE:
If you live in a low-lying area, you should have an evacuation route planned out. (To determine whether you live in a low-lying area, look at your driver's license; if it says "Florida," you live in a low-lying area). The purpose of having an evacuation route is to avoid being trapped in your home when a major storm hits. Instead, you will be trapped in a gigantic traffic jam several miles from your home, along with two hundred thousand other evacuees. So, as a bonus, you will not be lonely.

HURRICANE SUPPLIES:
If you don't evacuate, you will need a mess of supplies. Do not buy them now! Florida tradition requires that you wait until the last possible minute, then go to the supermarket and get into vicious fights with strangers over who gets the last can of SPAM. In addition to food and water, you will need the following supplies.

- 23 flashlights
- At least $167 worth of batteries that turn out, when the power goes off, to be the wrong size for the flashlights.
- Bleach. (No, I don't know what the bleach is for. NOBODY knows what the bleach is for, but it's traditional, so GET some!)
- A big knife that you can strap to your leg. (This will be useless in a hurricane, but it looks cool.)
- A large quantity of raw chicken, to placate the alligators. (Ask anybody who went through Andrew; after the hurricane, there WILL be irate alligators.)
- $35,000 in cash or diamonds so that, after the hurricane passes, you can buy a generator from a man with no discernible teeth.

Of course these are just basic precautions. As the hurricane draws near, it is vitally important that you keep abreast of the situation by turning on your television and watching TV reporters in rain slickers stand right next to the ocean and tell you over and over how vitally important it is for everybody to stay away from the ocean.

Good luck, and remember: Its great living in Paradise.

==================================

I just got this from a friend of mine that just got slammed living down in the panhandle.  Thankfully, I live in PA.

The panhandle did not get slammed, trust me. We did twice in 2 weeks. I have 3 friends who have no home left there is about 25 thousand dollars of damage to my house, compleat with a 100 foot tree in my pool. And i had to take my canoe to the store yesterday.

there is no gas, no food, no electrocuted, in some spots ( They had to throw most of the noncan stuff out when the power fails) And now we have Ivan gunning for us.

I have had enough of hurricanes. and find nothing humorous about them. :) But then and again you gotta laugh because you can't do anything else. ;) :)

The panhandle did not get slammed, trust me...

Perhaps I should have phrased that more clearly.  As a whole, I would agree that the panhandle did not get slammed, but my friend Evan certainly was.  A huge tree in his neighbor's front yard came down and completely demolished the front half of his small 2 bedroom house.  The flood damage, at least, was already expected.

... And now we have Ivan gunning for us.

Yep.  Ivan smacked Grenada hard and is now on it's way to Jamaica, Cuba, and then the US.  Ivan is taking a fairly similar track to Charley, IIRC, so it looks like Southwest Florida is in for it again at this rate.

... then and again you gotta laugh because you can't do anything else.

I believe that is exactly why Evan sent me this.   :-\

I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to get the tree out of my pool, when the flooding stops.
And i miss my family they are up in Georgia until i can get a roof on and they can get in here. :(

I wasant trying to slam your post. Its just a little hard to take it all in. I have had to save my whole life to be here. And these freaking hurricanes keep trying to take it all away from me. the center of both of them passed 25 miles away from where i live.

And I'm pretty sure my insurance guy is sick of seeing me! He just cut me a check and now he has to come out and do it all over again. :)

We don't know yet.  Our season is about the same as yours but I think it's a little bit longer.  We've had a really wet summer (and that's VERY nice!) so being kinda pessimistic we'er kinda thinking that if we don't get hit with a hurricane this year our winter is gonna be a soggy one.

Ferret and I figure we've got about 2 years left here before the Navy moves us away and I am hopeing that I get to go though another hurricane.  Ya I know that's strange but some of my best memories is having all of my family in one house (we had a gas stove) having a party.  We played hide and seek in the dark and the grown ups played cards all night.  I want my kids to know that yes storms are scary but it isn't the end of the world either.

Let's all hope Ivan gives ya'll a miss!

I hope it misses as well we where allready waterloged in this area because of a verry heavy rains, flooding is really becoming a problem but its suposed to start going down on Thurs.

My neiborhood is only 2 miles from the beach so we got zapped by the tidal surge then the rain. Its now still an island and we have to use canoes to get to dry land to go shopping ect. :P :P :P

And yes hurricane partys are the bomb!!! :rwoot: :rwoot:

Thanks again and take care! :)

How do you have power? I mean during the el nino years back I used hampsters on treadmills to generate electricity...unfortunatly hampsters are unionized now and the ASPCA frowns upon whipping small furry animals so I can power my 42" TV.

What's up is the fact that the last 5 years or so have been suspiciously quiet.

When that happens, everyone that lives on the beach or within 40 miles of one (and that means most everyone in Florida) gets awfull nervous, because everything that Posidon has been saving up comes out in a flood.

Hey...I resemble that remark....I only visit Florida in February (tho' my wife, with her parents there, is there now)..and have lived in NE for the last 11 years..and believe me, if I found a comparable job in westerm PA or NY, I'd be there...

But my prayers go out to the Floridians...most of them moved there to avoid ice fishing, which I still enjoy..

The utility guys here have nads the size of Texas.
They fixed the power in my neighborhood in a "lull" in the Storm with 55 mph gusts still going on. In a Cherry picker.

This is after working 24-7 to fix the damage from the last storm. We still have about 500,000  people with out power or water here.
I have to boil all of my water because of the flooding.

The biggest problem we have in my area now is flooding. We have had 25 extra inches this year before the storms,And there is literally no where for it to go. :(

I have pretty much made up my mind that we are getting a generator tho. This is getting real old.
And now we have one named Ivan heading right for us. Im going to have to be comitted if this keeps up( Im not joking) The stress is really starting to get to me. :( :( :(

I don't know who you guys in Florida pissed off and how you did it.  But man you did it good.

Of course JC offered it up to the gulf coast, and then told it to go to Louisiana.  So it'll probably get confused between his Alabama and LA and hit me in Mississippi instead.

Gambler, how can anything mistake a Bayou patios for a Mississippi drawl? ;D

Nah, I think that it's going to hit the Keys, skip off and plough through the Gulf (might be that this one has enough inertia to push it agianst the currents) and hit between New Orleans and Galvaston or even possibly Galvaston and the Ucatan.

chop up tree into firewood and roast marshmellows?  What most people up here would do, but in canada chainsaws and firestarting kits are pretty easy to come by.

You can do smores or baked potatoes alternatively.

Seriously.  If you can't move the tree at all, chop it into sections.

Apology accepted.  I can't imagine the stress you guys are going through down there.  It's mind-blowing to those of us who are out of the storm paths to think that not one, not two, but THREE freaking hurricanes in such a short period of time have landed hard on you.

Gambler you would not believe the chaos these 2 storms have caused here.

To add to the fear of losing our homes we, have no gas because the tankers could not unload it during the storms, Now we do have the tankers in they are loading it into trucks. The trucks are going out and promptly getting stuck in HUGE traffic jams of people returning from being evacuated.

We have no food because all of it went bad because the power went out. The food that is here cant be delivered because there is no fuel. And the semis bringing in stuff from out of state are stuck in the above traffic jams.

There isn't any Tarps, Plywood Tape, etc any where within a 100 mile radius of here. And i could not drive to go get it because there is no gas, and The traffic is all fouled up.

We are still flooded in many areas and all it has done is rain.

And what really pisses me off is the media across the country thinks Bill Clintons heart surgery is more important. Than 2 natural disasters in 2 weeks trying to wipe a state off the map. With another comming.

I hope this helps you relate to my irritation ,and i really am sorry.

I agree that the media is a bunch of stuid f*cks who need to get their f*cking act together but I digress!

What can I do to help?  Can I send you folks some clothes?  Blankets?  Anything?

I know the traffic is really insane but at some point it's gonna let up and help can get there via Red Cross, UPS, USPS, ect.

Can anyone else help?  Are there any forum members here that is close enough to help?

Crossing my fingers for you Ravok!

You know really sucks is that all of the people returning will have to leave as soon as they get here.

Other than being flooded in and the Roof and water damage to the top floor of my place I'm doing OK.
But thank you so much for your kind offer. :) :) :)

If Ivan is going to hit the coast I'm out of here. I'm loading up my horses and pets and going to Georgia, Where i have my Fiance and kids staying.
I have been through class 4 and 5 hurricanes on Okinawa and i know its going to pretty much finish off what the first 2 did not. :(

I have all kinds of insurance but its a shame this place was my life's dream. Its worth about 300,000,$ ( bought it in the early 80s)
And i have had to save and work 2 jobs most of my adult life to get it.( I was career AF you know how low our pay is.)

But screw it its only material things. As long as all my girls and pets are safe I'm still one of the luckyest guys on earth. :)

Ravok-

I can relate, though I've never been through anything better than a Class 3. As soon as the wind dies down, you just pop on here with a list of whatever you need and it'll be on the way Express Mail to whatever mailing address you give.

I'm just praying that it gets diverted out to the gulf and dies there. I don't want this thing to hit any where in the US.

You know nothing will die out in the Gulf this time of year, man. The water temp is still high 70's/low 80's. It might not get any stronger after getting in the Gulf, but it definately won't die down. Think Fredrick.

Me, I'm just going to be happy if I still have a trailer when it's done. I only live 100 miles inland or so (Auburn, Ala.) and I know that this one is going to be a killer- Ivan the Terrible indeed.

Ivan ain't no hurricane- it is a tornado with a name that just happens to be the size of Texas.

Thats how i had to explain it to my Mom to get her to leave.
Dude don't stay in the trailer what ever you do!! Go futher inland and find a good solid building to wait it out.

And i know what you mean about the water temp. Its still 87 degrees here. :( Plenty of fuel to feed this bastige). >:( >:( >:(

I can still only hope. ;)

And thanks for your kind offer! If im still around after this one and in any position to do the same just give me a yell. :)

Now all it has to do is stop raining so i can get my horses out of here!!!!! Im going to wind up renting a semi or something High off the water so i can get the trailer out of here.
And im NOT leaving them here alone, to go through this kind of heck on their own.

Its really weird sitting here and looking around my place, and wondering if its all going to be gone in 3-4 days.

Im going to pack up what i can load in my truck. Get my mom and leave on sunday

Im really praying this thing swings out to the gulf.

It looks like your praying is doing a little bit of good.  From what I can read off the projected path, it appears that it's swinging a little further west before landfall.  It's back to hitting over the panhandle.

If I recall correctly, you're the one who volunteered to take the bullet for them.  Who knew Mother Nature might take you up on it.  From what I've been reading the steering winds are very light so the track isn't completely set yet.

Yeah, I know I volunteered. ;D Open mouth, pine tree gets blown in it before you can insert foot.

Either way, I'm glad it's going to go easy on Florida this time- and if it hits the Panahandle and Alabama, there is a better chance of us loosing a lot of those damn high-rise condos on the beaches. Anything over 4stories should be banned anyway!

Almost volunteered myself. Texas hasn't had a hurricane in a while, so let us take on for the team and give the Floridians a break, I was thinking.. But, God forgive me, I want to get out of junior college this year and move on with my life, and that isn't going to happen if the campus (or the house, for that matter) is under water. Both are located on Texas' coastal area, which is flood happy, to say the least.

Though, in all seriousness, the prediction tracks seem to be all over the place. We don't really know where Ivan is going to go, it seems to me. But, I must admit, my confidence in the weather forecasters has been somewhat lessen of late, considering how Charley and Frances gave them the slip to a degree.

I'm just a little worried about the rest of the places though...

My friend and her sister have a 2nd story condo in a little 4 story complex on the inland side of the strip in Gulf Shores. I was thinking of going there for a week next summer. :'( Oh, well... it's insured and Linds and Ash will at least get some money back out of it if it winds up in Bullock County!

Amateurs search for hurricane cures

JACKSONVILLE, Florida (AP) -- Amateur hurricane-busters have come up with any number of crackpot ideas to spare Florida from ferocious storms. Among them: blowing hurricanes away with giant fans or blowing them up with nuclear warheads.

Even the federal government got into the act, with three decades of ill-fated research called "Project Stormfury" before shelving the idea of weather modification in the 1980s.

But dozens of ideas -- part hope, part fantasy -- continue to crop up among weather wonks, Internet bloggers and others who think they have come up with a way to spare coastal residents the misery of hurricanes.

Suggestions have included coating the surface of the water with olive oil; towing an iceberg down to Florida to cool down the water temperature; or building large fans on the coast to blow away approaching storms.

"And then there was a guy who called and said he could pray them away," said Hugh Willoughby, a research professor with the International Hurricane Center at Florida International University.

By far the most outlandish proposal, and one of the most recurrent, was the idea to use a nuclear warhead to blow a hurricane out of the water.

"Hurricanes are bad enough without being radioactive," Willoughby said. "Put that genie back in the bottle. Nuclear weapons are more dangerous than hurricanes."

Willoughby, who reviewed some of the proposed inventions when he was director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's hurricane research division, said many of the ideas are quickly debunked for lacking a basic understanding of meteorology.

One government plan was to spread a substance on the water, but the wind and waves made it impossible to keep a slick, he said.

"All of these underestimate the scale of a storm," Willoughby said.

Still, one South Florida businessman thinks he has a winning idea -- flying a Boeing 747 into the monster storm, where it would hit it with tons of super absorbent powder, literally sucking it dry and breaking it apart.

Only a test will determine if it is a flight of fantasy, and there are no plans to try the process on the approaching Hurricane Ivan.

But businessman Peter Cordani, chief operating officer of Dyn-O-Mat, a company that sells environmental absorbent products, thinks he can knock down a storm by one or two categories.

He claims to have caused a thunderstorm to disappear in a test off Palm Beach, and he's assembled a team including two former astronauts to work on the plan.

"We have a lot of confidence in it," said Scott Mac Leod, one of the astronauts who tested the lunar module.

Others aren't so sure.

The government's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory describes the proposal as a long-shot: Any effect of the absorbent powder would be small, and require thousands of tons of goop, flown into the storm in hundreds of sorties every half hour or so.

Willoughby said the project would be "hugely expensive for not much benefit."

"It would really take all of the military heavy-lift aircraft that the United States has to carry the material, and there would be a major air traffic control problem around the eye," he told the AP last year.

The government suggests that amateur hurricane busters focus their energy on more realistic goals -- enforcing building codes, educating the public about preparedness and helping poorer nations prepare for the storms.

I give those guys an E for effort, but Jeez, nuking a hurricane?  I really don't think that would have an effect, other than put a buttload of radioactive material in the air.

As a living breathing human, I think I'd rather have the hurricane than the nuke.

At noon today they shut down all the Casinos in Gulfport, Biloxi, and the surrounding areas to customers.  They have until midnight to remove all the money from the cage and take it to the bank via armored car.  In addition they have to properly secure everything inside.

Once secured, gaming will search the boats to ensure that nobody is left inside and seal the doors.  Noone is allowed back into the boats until after gaming has come back and re-searched the boat.

[Edit]
So far there is no plans on shutting down the casino's here in Vicksburg.  We're 200+ miles inland so while we may get wind and rains, it won't be as severe.  During the hurricane 2 years ago they did shut us down and it was somewhat of a publicity problem because we had clear skies and sunshine instead of the problems expected.
