Saddle Valve on Iron Pipe Help Please...
« on: September 03, 2004, 02:12:15 pm »
Hi Friends, I had a new Refrigerator recieved today, and I need to hook up the Ice Maker, so I bought the Vinyle tubing, a few Compression Nuts and a saddle valve. I thought Our pipes under the sink where Copper, But alas they are Iron.

How difficult Is It to Use a Saddle Valve on an Iron pipe? I thought about shutting the water off, and drilling a 3/16 th inch hole, But I wasn't sure if that would work.

Thanks ahead of time,

Stephen

1.  You could replace said pipe with copper (if practical).

2.  If you drill the hole, you'll probably have to tap it and get a threaded connection.  Don't forget to use teflon tape around the threads, as this will help seal the connection.

3.  Buy some ice cube trays and do it the old fashioned way  ;D .

Thanks Mike, Good Advice. Replacing the Pipe with Copper is not really all that Practicle at this time. It would be a huge Process, since they run Throughout the length of the house in the Basement.

Good idea on the Taping bit though. Sounds like a good excuse to go to the Old Local, Tool Barn.

Sirgod, I think he means replacing only the length of iron pipe near your 'fridge.  If it's a short section, it shouldn't be too bad.

Yeah that's the strang part. The actual Pipe , doesn't have an Elbow, for a short link and then a regular faucet to go to the Sink, It's a straight pipe, with the Faucet coming out from the Floor. Kinda like

-----------------------------------------------------------F instead of

                                                   F
                                                  {
                                                  {
                                                 {
-------------------------------------------------

F being the Main Faucet where the Sink Flex Pipe comes out of . The only Iron Pipe is at least 18-20 feet long under the house, and then It's just joined into another Stretch of pipe about the same length.

Dang Olod House.,

kinda what e_look said...cut a 1 foot section out, cut the threads in both ends, get a phlanged piece of copper or PVC with the attendant couplers (get that first so you know what tread size to do) and just "slip" it in....

reminds me when I took the old water softener out of the loop and I sent my (then) 12 year old to shut the water off...I yelled "everything taken care of?" and got "Yep"...he turned the valve the wrong way..I started with the pipe cutter..water everywhere..sometimes you gotta do it yourself..

He did learn the lesson of "righty tighty, lefty loosey"...mainly by mopping up the mess...

Good luck, and let us know your final solution

Have a great weekend, let us know how you're doing, and don't get wet  :D

Will do, I kinda Pussed out on watching the Passion tonight. I want to Get the whole effect, as I didn't get to see It in the Theater, then the wife wife for some ungodly Reason wanted to try and play Trivial Pursuit against me.

I think she did It because she knew I was exhausted, and My mind wasn't in the game.

Oh well, here's to the Weekend All.

SHH. Don't give my wife any Ideas. Saturday she had me Building Book Cases most of the day, so I didn't get to It. Sunday she let me off for the day, and Today, It's back to work Moving Furniture around, throughout the whole house, and Possibly Enclosing a Shower Stall.

It might get done today, But I'm not sure.

Does that mean you didn't hitch the horses up, get the hay and excelsior, head west to Colorado, go to 10000 feet, cut the ice and pack it and then bring it home?   :D ;D

I know..been busy all weekend, and I didn't get Sunday off...had to challenge the commisay with all the peeps who bring thier kids with them to shop...I love kids, but they could be left at home...and I do understand the spouses of deployed personnel, but when that happened to us, we shoved all the kids into on room, and set a gaurd outside so they wouldn't escape....when the parents came home, they had the piock of the crop  :lol:

You can always steal the neighbors, or a good set of needlenose vise grips works..uhh how do I know this.......then there is the public utilities method, but you have to find the place where they turn it off, and a 6 foot extension...

Good luck, and enjoy what I sent...as I said, pass it around to those who might need it..one should always be able to convert from peak to peak to RMS whether it's triangle, sine or square wave
