Linux Question
« on: August 29, 2004, 10:37:50 am »
Last weekend in a fit of computer boredom I picked up SuSe Linux Professional 9.1.  I had my old box just sitting around doing nothing since last December so I figured what the heck.

The system is a P3 750 with currently 128mb Ram (it used to have 384 but a chip died).
1 x 15gb Hard Drive
1 x 60gb Hard Drive

I know I can partition the drives down to smaller chunks and mount the various folders on different partitions.  The default install wants to dump everything on one of the two drives.  But it ignores the other.  I have gone in and played around with partitioning the other drive etc but I'm not happy with how it is coming down.  So far I have gone through the install 4 or 5 times.  Just experimenting with things.

The latest installation is set up as follows

15gb set up as hda1 swap 384mb
                     hda2  /      balance

60gb set up as hdb1 /home 20gb
                      hdb2 /var    40gb

My intentions for this box are to use it as an inhouse mailserver.  My wife and I both have e-mail accounts in the outside world (on different ISP's), but sometimes we e things to each other.  My thought was that if I set up inhouse e-mail I can e stuff from my inhouse to her inhouse and it'll go much faster.

We also want to move all of our MP3's to a shared folder which we can then play music on the home theater etc without tying up either of our own computers.

I don't think I've got the drives set up to give me the most bang for my bucks.

What do you guys think?
