The year is 2270. For months the Federation Council has debated what do to about the Klingo-Kzin War. Endless debate. Endless attempts at reaching a diplomatic solution. All for naught.
The Kzinti, growing desperate, had repeatedly pointed to the Treaty of Bast. Said treaty, among other things, bound the Federation to assist the Kzinti if they were attacked by the Klingons. The term ?assist? being the operative term.
For the Kzinti, a warrior race, the term assist meant only one thing; ?Assist in Killing the Enemy?. For the Federation it was debatable. And for the past several years, much to the anger of the Kzinti, the Federation only provided indirect military assistance.
Then came the Potemkin Incident. On August 21, 2270, the U.S.S. Potemkin and the U.S.S. Trenton responded to an alien emergency distress call in the Klingon neutral zone. Upon arriving they found a small convoy of alien warships fleeing a much larger Klingon task force.
The ships identified themselves as being Hydran, a heretofore unknown non-humanoid race, and asked for asylum within Federation space. Accordingly, the heavily damaged Hydran ships were escorted into Federation space and the Klingon ships were ordered to clear the neutral zone.
The Klingon ships, in direct violation of the neutral zone treaty, ignored the Federation warnings, entered Federation space, and engaged the task force.
In the battle that followed the U.S.S. Potemkin, a Federation Heavy Cruiser, was lost in deep space with all hands. Several of the Hydran ships were destroyed as well before the U.S.S. Enterprise and the U.S.S. Constellation were able to arrive on station and drive off the Klingon assault group.
Five days later the Federation council authorized military action in Kzinti space.
