A Dose of the Past that Lead to our Present
« on: August 07, 2004, 07:01:30 am »
I stumbled on a site concerning the Animated Series, and found it a real shot in the arm for the distant Trek past.  Perhaps I am the last to know of this site, and this is not news to anyone.  Then again, I can't take the chance that all those real audio records of these episodes might not be known to anyone here.

The Kzin and their theatrical origins to Trek, SFB and then to our own little bubble of space.  The Pirates of Orion.  Unexplored worlds so old they were syndicated before I was born.

Cherished memories, for when I found them the first time as a child, and again here.

I remember the show, I was 11 when it first aired, they changed the music slightly, but it still began with the classic "Space, the final frontier..."

The only bad point was how cheap Hanna-Barberra were, reusing shots, cheap movement, badly drawn aliens, this hurt some brillaint episoides.

But parts of it made it into Trek lore, Kirk's middle name, 'Tiberius' is first heard in an animated episode, the concept of 'holodecks,'just to name two.

I understand the entire run is being put on DVD.

M'ress!!!

That was the feline communication officer that I remembered from the old Captian's Log books. She was Uhura's mid-watch counterpart and I have been serching for hername forever!

I wonder if my old public library still has those Captian's Log books, is ayone else familiar with them?

Yeah, I had a bunch of the Captains log books, wish I could find them.  Totally loved this show when I was a kid, although some of it was a bit disappointing, some of the extra crew members (aliens) were cool.  Doesn't hurt that it's the original cast doing the voices and not some cheap knock-offs either.

Ah, yes. I remember the series well. I heard rumors of it coming out on DVD and believe you can still get it on VHS. I also have the entire series of Captain's Logs paperback. I especially loved the episode "More Trouble with Tribbles" for the showing of the Klingon Stasis field Generator mounted on their ships. I always loved having one of those in use in fleet action scenarios in SFB games. The Klingon Genetically Engineered Tribble predator was cool, too.
Several of them were quite good as far as the storyline. Even if the cartoon graphics of the day were comparatively campy by todays standards.

I still have the paperbacks on a shelf, and I have the old "Concordiance" Bjo Trimble put together, that had every Trek reference from TOS and the Cartoon.

Still fun to look at to this day, even though the book is more than 25 years old.

Well, I was like, eight or nine when I doscovered them (about 1988) and they were already well-worn  even as hardbacks by that time. I'm clinging to the hope that the library still has them and will let me make them an offer.

I've never seen TAS, but if they are more like the Captian's Log books and the Diane Duane books, then I'm prety sure I'd like them quite a bit.

Hmm, I plan on getting them if they ever come out on DVD.  They do seem a little weak from what I've seen from the site, of course the clips on the site doesn't really have all that great of sound so it's hard to tell.

I believe it is these Captain's Logs that people speak about that introduced me to the animated series, though I didn't know it at the time.  Crumbling pages in old rebound hardback in some dusty corner of the small public library that I went to with my father at the time.

I've never seen the animated series, but I think i've read all of them.  I would also venture to say that those books started me along my road to my current reading habits.

I still remember the episode that introduced the Kzin, "Slaver Weapon."

I do too!!! That was, and still is my favorite. :)
It also turned me on to Larry Niven.
