I think the 109 has it's aesthetic appeals as well. IMHO, they are both works of genius, but the spitfire does have a special look, like a piece of art.
On a side note, flying flight sims, that are supposedly very accurate (supposedly being the key word here) I've always faired better in a 109 than a spit. Now, others have better luck with the spit, but for some reason I tend to work better with the 109.
Glad I never flew a 109 in perwson though. I'm a fairly big guy, and doubt I'd be comfortable in that tiny cockpit.
BTW, I once read in horrido where one of the big aces of germany was once flying with a basket of lobsters or wine, or soemthing, to a party and was engaged by a brit. They faught, with the ace being at a severe disadvantage because there was no place but on his lap to put the basket, and it made it very difficult to fight. In any event, they reached a stalemate and landed in a field, where they shared some of the wine he was carrying, and went their seperate ways.
