I recently obtained an SFC III CD for my son so we could play on line but its a UK version. Do I install UK or US patches?

You will won't to use the UK patches.That is what they are designed for.I hope this helps.

If you are installing the Build 534 Patch (as you should be) - then it will make no difference whether it's UK or US edition.
