Since we're talking about bringing back ships...
« on: August 11, 2004, 09:46:53 am »
Been a while, but I remember a sweet little Lyran minelayer that none of the Lyrans liked - kicked butt in PvP.  I wonder if anyone would be interested in bringing those type of ships back?

What ship is this?  was it pulled out of somebody's rectum or based on SFB?

Everyone has minelayers from SFB that I guess could be added in.

I have given some serious thought to adding minelayer ships to SFC in the past, and I just can't see how it would be implemented. Laying mines would have to be through classic laying (which is not practical for SFC) or through transporters.

.. To be honest, these ships wouldn't come up to par with their real function, and the AI would not be able to use it properly. I say: skip.

A minelayer in PvHexx situation would probably come in pretty handy <snicker> ;D

As for AI minelayers, just restrict 'em so they won't show up as AI in mission but would be available to buy in the shipyards, that is, if anyone would be interested in flyin' 'em. They could come in handy in an escort role or as a means to take advantage of a downed shield :)

I've added minelayers by replacing the mine racks with transporters and giving additional t-bombs. Actually the AI is quite proficient with them. It doesn't take long before you're fighting in a pretty dense minefield as well. It benefits some races more than others and, therefore, some would like, some wouldn't. I personally like them.

So.. for each minerack, a transporter instead.. and up to 8 additional tbombs?
IIIiinn-teresting idea. However, these ships would have to be entered as SPECIAL in the shiplist as they're like commando ships: kinda rare.

Also, what about the commando side-effect? ..
.. AND..what about that freighter with a monster number of mineracks? :)

Got me. I didn't think about using them as psuedo commando ships. ::) I guess that the total # of marines available to them could be limited. Maybe not allow them to buy extras (?).

I didn't add minelaying freighters. I don't see a particular use for them. I'm open to suggestions though. 8)

Is it possible to have "secret" mine placement, as it was in SFB?

With the source code, sure.

Mine layers would only make sense (if following cannon)

as an ai ship that would ring a base or other such static target with defensive mines
as an ai ship laying a strip minefield across a map
mining the path of a convoy (maybe a mission here, save the convoy?????)
removing the mines from a planet assault (too bad the in game times would allow for a wait to let them self distruct, BUT potentially a mission here too????)

Unless given some offensive weapons mine ships would tend to be targets.  Putting alot of transporters on one to Tbomb the crap outta someone would work somewhat.  But it IMHO would be a novelty item in this role, much like the stripped down mauler ships.

Well, you could force the enemy to do something before the mines blow by sending in more & more reinforcement's as time goes on.

If I remember correctly, this pup had 7 transporters and 15 mines, maybe 20-30 marines.  So much for the commando worries.  I have no idea if it was <pause for Heavenly Choir> **SFB Canon**  :P

Laflin, do you actually like any ships that aren't over-gunned unbalanced cheese-buckets?

Actually, yes, but I was wondering if you actually play the game for fun or fictional historical accuracy?

I've always considered fair and balanced fights to be fun.

So have I - but it is always nice to take a lesser ship against a greater one once in a while.  This Lyran minesweeper had 3 ph1, 4 ph3 and 3 ESG if I remember correctly.  Exactly how is this cheese?

I hate the way the AI uses T-bombs.  Demmed thing uses any ship as a minelayer!
