ATi Mobility Drivers, clocking AMD 64's
« on: August 09, 2004, 08:57:26 am »
So I got my laptop this past week, but I have a slight problem. It seems that Knights of the Old Republic doesn't work so well with it. It freezes when I go to the ingame menu. I can't seem to find the proper driver update for ATi Mobility 9600 either.

Also, my AMD 64 3000+ is clocked at ~800mhz. WTF?

AMD 64 processors have cool n quiet technology.

Whenever there is no load on the processor the mulitplier on the CPU is dropped... the processor speed becomes 800 mhz. Reduces heat and noise apparently:

People at these AMD forums should have all the answers you need.

It almost sounds like your BIOS isn't right, or that they Don't have the MB set up right. BUt It should be showing alot faster then 800 MHZ. Try out Belarc and tell us what It says Iceman.

OR even EVEREST Home version. I'll have t ofind the link for that one again.

Doh. Monty answered also. I wasn't aware of the drop in Proccessor speed.

id recommend going to your pc manufacturers web site to check on the drivers for your ati card and get the letest patch for KOTOR that should solve a few problems

And then their was a scream like no other in the universe

I've tried going to the manufacturer site with no luck. Also, KOTOR is patched fully.

Here's the dumb and obvious.  You sure that isn't the bus speed?

Download GCPUID to give you your FSP clock speed, CPU multiplyer info at the click of a mouse.  ;)

If it is Cool and Quiet you should be able to disable it in the bios.

CPU Multiplier: x4.0

That does not look right. I've got a 3200 clawhammer and my multiplier starts at 10 and remains 10. My cpu also shows the correct speed 2.0. Do you see the little red stopwatch on the GCPUID toolbar. Click on it and up your multiplier. Up your multiplier to 9 and then refresh and restart GCPUID. I'm not sure why it would have the multiplier at set at 4 though.

You might like to check out this website.  Link

It appears that with the laptop that they were testing that the CPU throttled down to 800 mhz when not being used.  As you boost your usage the speed increases.  You might try running something that will stress the CPU (SETI at home for example :) ) and then use your CPU speed monitoring program.

Yeah, a multiplier of x4 just isn't right on a normal computer but on a power saving laptop it might make sense. Do what Nemesis says; fire up Seti@home if you have it or you can download Prime95 (http://mersenne.org/gimps/p95v238.exe) which really stresses the CPU, check the CPU usage in Task Manager to make sure it's running at 100% and click refresh on GCPUID to see if the multiplier rises.

BTW, is it only KOTOR your having trouble with? Have you tried any other games or video benchmarking tools, (i.e. 3DMark2003), to see if it works properly? It might be just a driver bug for that game.

It's just KOTOR. I've played Joint Ops and a few others.

I upped the multiplier to 9.0, and it now clocks at 1800MHz. I can go to either 10 or 10.5 to OC it but I'd rather not, so thats one problem solved (sorta). I still can't run KOTOR though.
