I have a P4 3.6 gig and 512MB ram with a GeForce FX 5600 ultra.
Would this be enough to run DOOM 3 on fairly high settings, I had to scale down FarCry slightly. Though I will be getting another 512 soon.

Your setup is almost identical to mine, and I assume you have 256megabytes of video RAM, you can run it a notch below ulta high settings like I do with 2x anti aliasing at 800x600 if not better. Trust me, it will run GREAT. Make sure you have a good sound card too, that's a big part of it.

Towlie has a good point here. I was able to pick up a 5.1 surround sound Card and Speakers the other day (Creative labs) and The differance in games is incredible. It's down right eerie hearing a Zombie coming near you from the right or left, and actually having the Audial Clue there.

I couldn't believe how fast it was being shared on p2p and newgroups. Those people suck! IF they're downloading it to just get it early, ok, but they better damn well buy it! This game was well worth the money, although the CD-KEY was hidden under the LAST CD and I went nuts looking for it, I almost contacted ACTIVISION thinking it wasn't included. After all, the first thing it asks when you pop in disk one is the CD-KEY, and it's hidden under the last CD.

Mine wasn't hidden, but It was where the 4th CD would have been (My copy only had 3 cd's). I did have to look for It though, as It only said the CD key was on the Jewel case.

I picked it up yesterday evening (actually surprised it was available here already).  Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to play yet, as I had company.  If I don't hit the pool hall with my buddy tonight I will probably delve into it.  I fear becoming too engrossed though, as I am quite happy with my social life at the moment. :)

Based on this review http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2146&p=1

I reckon I'm going to need a significant upgrade not only to make the game playable but to make it worth purchasing. Current rig:

Athlon XP 2500+
512Mb RAM
GF4 Ti4200
Onboard sound (stereo).

Looks like I've found my excuse to do a significant upgrade.

A good sound card makes a big difference in a lot of games, not just Doom 3.  After I installed Creative Audigy 2 zs Gamer, I noticed a difference even in games like NeverWinter Nights.  I used to think my on-board sound was good enough, I didn't realize how wrong I was.  Besides that sound card is a steal when you consider the games that are included with it.

Had a chance to play around with it last night, but I am only somewhat impressed.  It's easily one of the nicest looking games I've ever seen or currently available.  Other than that I don't find it particularly compelling.

The story is half decent so far, but isn't really ground breaking.  It plays exactly like old school 90s FPS games.  The sound is passable, except for the weapons which are f-ing horrible.  Other than the graphics Doom 3 is just mediocre.

Pity...I was hoping for a really solid game.

Wow only out a week and there is already an exploit out.  You can read more about it here.  But basically what it is saying is that people are trying to get Doom 3 players to download and install a .pak file into the game to play co-op.  This file than allows server admins to get a hold of your CD key when you log on to a non-secure server.  That is just plain sad, well anyway heads up people.
