Thanks Stephen, but I'm kinda set on this.  I've got a good friendship with her, and however long it lasts, it lasts.  But I have no intention of ever moving in a direction that would bring marriage or kids, and her, being a good little catholic girl, would most likely want that.  Also, It's pretty clear that she has little to no experience with men in that kind of way, so I'd rather not dissillusion her with a relationship that could never go anywhere.
Besides, like I said, thing always go badly, so I'd prefer when they do that I am in a position that they don't have to be worse than necessary.

Yo Clark,

Just one thing to consider.  Perhaps you should stick to your guns about not getting involved, but would it hurt your friendship if you told her how attracted to her you were, but decided that you didn't want to push the issue due to valuing her friendship?  You know, being totally upfront and honest about it.

Thing is, if you don't let her know and she does like you, you might miss a chance to become more involved.  I know I've banged my head against the wall on several occassions when I ran into girls I knew from high school or college who said they had wished I'd asked them out.  These were girls I'd have loved to dated back then, but had no idea they wanted to date me as well.

Well. lets just say I'm a helluva lot less reluctant to let the girls know how I feel now.

best wishes and good luck.

I'm fairly certain she's interested in me, which is a rare thing for me since I'm so bad at reading a person's intent.  For instance, she's not a very touchy feely person, and I'm next to certain she knows that I'm not the type of person that is either.  Let me put it this way- I grew up in a family with no higs or kisses, save from my grandma, no warm affection, and my time in the army nearly completely solidified that mentality.  I'm simply not comfortable with people touching me.  She has lately made it a point to try to break through that- grabbing my hand or arm playfully, or hugging me at random times, which is somewhat out of character for her as far as I can tell.
Yeah, I'm fairly certain she's interested, even if it isn't on a conscious level, but I made this decision just the same.  The biggest problem is that I'm also fairly certain that there are certain things she wants in this life- marriage, kids, little suburban house, you know, the works, and these are things I'm not offering.  I've also noticed her marked silence whenever I drop a hint like "and people wonder why I don't want  to have kids."  I can't just be using the poor girl when I know full well I'm not going to giver her what she wants.

Wow, just my luck...
I we had a karate picnic today, and she made every attempt to be near me and get hugs and such out of me.  Of course I didn't realize it until well afterwards, but oh well.
Now, stephen, you're a karate master?  Where you live?  Oklahoma?  You should move up to minnesota, I'd train with you much more than once every couple weeks.

You never know.  I have two very close friends.  The girl always wanted kids, and did lots to be around them.  She and I did volunteer work at local elementary schools teaching astronomy to first and second graders.

The guy wanted no kids; none at all.

The result?  Four years after they stated seeing each other they are still quite happy together.  I just talked to them last week.  They've got a new house, two great pets, and no kids.  I asked the girl about kids, and she told me she had decided that she raised enough younger siblings to take care of those urges, and -- anyway -- he's more than worth it.

Just a completely unrelated anecdote that really says, you never know what the other person *really* wants.
