The progressive server.
« on: August 04, 2004, 06:57:55 am »
Since Gook can retread one thread into dozens of new ones I will start one.

Has anybody thought of a progressive server where there are a series of rounds and in each round everybody has the same class of ship.

I don't really care if you start at the big end or the little end, but consider that in Round One everybody gets a good Frigate and there are only Frigates in the yard. After a time Round Two begins and the shipyard now only has Light Cruiser's in it. Round Three moves up to Heavy Cruisers and then finally Dreadnaughts and Heavy Battle Cruisers. Yes, everybody gets a DN or equivalent. Imagine every Romulan in a KVL.

Of course this game will be very artificial in that ships are going to have to be restricted in narrow bands and some haggling will be involved in determining which ships will be allowed in play for any round to ensure some sort of balance. In fact it may not be possible to have all empires in play. Also it would be the line ships which are really cheap and hence you get busted back into line ships when you lose your starting command variant.

Oh and this type of server won't work with any LOS rules or restrictions on attacking in enemy space.

Not sure I can be bothered, but as you are the Doc, can you run an AI standard patrol in 2 minutes in a KRC? If so, there is no problem and I am utterly wrong. If you cannot, then the KRC is a worse ship for AI missions than ones I know can.

If your gonna use OP+, imagine every Rom in an OmniHawk or DeamonHawk. :D

It will require some thought to get the list right. The idea is that you get a CC and if you lose it you get busted back to a CA etc, but everybody has to have a comparable ship, and some empires may not be able to put up a ship or two so may have to be left out. Leaving some out would make the balance simpler to find. I haven't really thought about era's because drone speed will be a balancing act too. everybody in FF with fast drones? I have no idea how that will work simply because I have not seen it on a server. Doesn't make my R-KFR too safe though.

Actually I want to see everybody start in a BB in the DN class, just because I want to have a good laugh. It will be complete missery for some but what the hell, what will everybody else have when I'm in a WE?

Hoi Cleaven,

I would give this one go. Yes, ship selection is key. If done right, a battlefest type campaign would add a change of pace.

Neat idea.

Take care

There's a thing called "a Captain's round", IIRC. It's where everyone chooses a tourney cruiser and flies one round against each opponent. Then everyone switches to a different cruiser and does it again... until everyone has flown against everyone else in every ship. Then you count up total victories. The Captain with the most victories wins (naturally). Doesn't have to be tourney cruisers. It could be any ship class.
If Romulans aren't cowards, then why do they taste like chicken?
