Which base?  The South Pole base or Atlantis itself?

The South Pole base was discovered on the Season 7 SG-1 Finale by O'Neal who had his brain filled with the knowledge of the ancients.  By the premiere of SG:Atlantis, a permanent structure had been set up at the Ancient complex.

There is no true explanation as to why there is a stargate in space.  The only thing I can think of is that a gate in space is a great way to protect a planet.  The only way to use it as an infiltration device is to have ships.  Imagine sending a squad through the gate without sending a MALP first.  All those bodies drifting in space.  The other consideration is that having a Stargate in the middle of a base is highly insecure.  There have been many instances where hostiles have made it through the gate into the Cheyenne Mountain complex.  Even with the iris things can slip by and be immediately in the control center.

In space, not so easily done.

The first x-302 was built at the very beginning of season 6, the premier actually named Redemption. That one was lost, on purpose I might add. The x-303 was also introduced in the middle of season 6, in the episode Prometheus, episode 11. In the same episode, Major Davis states that they don't have any of the 302s ready for flight yet so Teal'c and O'Neill have to use one of the death gliders they got from Anubis's ship that was crash just south of Alaska in episode 3 of season 6, Descent. So, what this boils down to is that they have had well over a year and a half to build new 302s. The ones we see in the season 7 finale, The Lost City I'd imagine. Also, the Prometheus, or x-303, had its weapon systems and shields upgraded with Asgard technology as a way of saying thank you for saving their butts again. This was mentioned in the episode Disclosure, when the Stagate project was disclosed to the French, Chinese and the English. Disclosure was a clips episode BTW.

Are you talking about the Atlantis base that was submerged on the waterworld and is curently being used by the SGC personell? That base was an Ancient City. The location of the city, the Gate coordinates of the city anyway, was found in the outpost base, which was found by O'Neill in last years seaon finale, in Antarctica during the season premier of SG-1 just a couple of weeks ago. The series premier of Atlantis showed how people from earth went through the stargate to the lost city. As for how that city came to be on a water world, I have no idea as they haven't mentioned it yet. At least in the episodes that I have seen.

The x-302 fighters probably came from the Prometheus or a base somewhere. They are capable of atmospheric and space flight so they could have come from anywhere.

The bigger ship is the x-303 or the Prometheus. it was introduced in the season 6 episode Prometheus. In that episode major Davis mentions that there aren't any 302s ready for flight. I took this to mean that they were building more and that they were getting close to being done. Oh, in the season 7 episode Fragile Balance, Carter and O'Neill conducted a briefing for pilots about the capabilities of the death gliders. Those were probably the pilots of the 302s.

The 302s and the 303 were all built by the US as a force to battle the Goa'ulds.
