Topic: Doom 3

   Got Doom 3 when Best Buy opened this morning. The guy told me yesterday they had it in stock but couldn't sell it untill 10am today. Got there, he was just opening the box to unpack them.

    After installing and updating DX and my video drivers (yes, there were updates released on 7-27) I got to try it.

    The game lives past the hype! I am just getting familiar with the game and exploring the offices and interacting, but it reminds me of AVP2, but much more depth, detail, and interaction. All characters interact and make eye contact with you, even a droid that escorts you, it doesn't just follow a course, but it watches you and carefully leads you. I am going back to game, but it lives past the hype. If you have a good system, get it, it's worth it. And I have a day and a half off to enjoy it.

  Okay, it starts off slow, just walking around, listening to rumors, then BAM! You are in the action. The graphics are the same as the movie final fantasy I would have to say, and I don't have it on highest settings even, but I am amazed! I find myself running most of the time trying to help people and getting attacked from every dark corner, which there is no shortage of. I must take a break and let the adrenaline settle and remind myself it is just a game. I am glad no cheat codes have leaked out to ruin this experience.

You could always do the illegal thing and download the game from somewhere. I read just the other day that there have been at least 50,000 downloads of the full, final version of the game.

BTW, I am just kidding about doing the illegal download.

I saw the same stat jauldeaux.  Most games don't normally get anywhere near that number, though they probably won't sell as much either.  Calculated out, it translates into almost 3 million in lost revenue.  Fairly large chunk of change, that.

Really doesn't matter to me. Like many PC guys, I'd need to buy fresh iron to even run it.

Wow I just updated my system and I still can't run that game at it's highest settings.  I'd have to go out and buy another video card.

Same here, and I'm running a Gforce 4400 with 128 MB. and a 1.62 AMD procc.

It still skips even on Medium .

 It is way too addicting. You do have to search for items and clues, and it is really damn creepy! Some of the zombies are so realistic in the flashlight, then with the errie noises, the conspiracies. And yes, there is a chainsaw and logical explanation of why there are chainsaws on mars.

  What's nice is you are reviewing other people's logs searching for clues to some things, but it's not like the old Jedi Outcast hunt for the key type thing. It's actually fun and thrilling.

 It reminds me alot of AVP2 still, but WAY the hell better. VERY interactive enviroment and alot of terminals to interface with also. Hopefully, AVP3 will use this engine when it's produced.

   I've always been into horror movies as a kid and got desensitized to them early, but it's nice to have something like this that will startle the hell out of you, no matter how prepared you are.

I have a P4 3.6 gig and 512MB ram with a GeForce FX 5600 ultra.
Would this be enough to run DOOM 3 on fairly high settings, I had to scale down FarCry slightly. Though I will be getting another 512 soon.

I am against pirating of games but I must say this.

game companies dont lose money from a pirtate copy of a game because people who pirate games where never going to pay their money for them in the first place. If those people would never have paid for the game, the company itself has never really lost any revinue because it would never have gained it.

Again, I am against pirating. I have done it, as most people have but only when I could not afford to buy a game or would never have bought it in the first place. I have done it on games to try them out too. ( that was years ago and yes, I am ashamed ).

Oh man, I cant wait for Rome: Total War. That will be mine day 1. I am even pondering Pre Ordering it.

In my experience if i played a pirate game that i liked I would buy it-

1) I value the game more if I have paid for it.
2) I want a version that won't have bugs due to it being ripped open by people to circumvent copy protection.
3) Financial support for the developers.

Admitedly I've played very few pirate games... and these days I read reviews more and try offical demos, but the ones I've liked I went out and bought - the others had very little play time and were deleted.

In general I don't agree with pirating.

It only really annoys me though when someone CAN afford the game but won't pay for it... and its a game they like.

I don't know if I'll get RTW.

I bought Shogun TW and either I didn't get it or I was just plain bad at it.

I bought Medievil TW and while i enjoyed the skirmishes... I could never really get hold of the campaign - It just didn't keep my attention. I'm not sure why that was.

I'll play the RTW demo if there is one and make up my mind - however twice bitten, third time....

I've never pirated newly released games (also rather afraid of getting a bucketload of viruses if I did so) BUT I think in the WESTERN world that's a bunch of industrial heads wanting to blame something for their own inadequecies.  In the East (Asia) it is an entirely different matter and is completely applicable, as piracy costs mucho bucks down there for companies, and the pirated items are sold on the market...

I too am against piracy on the whole however, on the otherhand, I think it only helps sales overall.  I DO play official demos that are sent out and I've bought SEVERAL games after my experiences with those.

   Your setup is almost identical to mine, and I assume you have 256megabytes of video RAM, you can run it a notch below ulta high settings like I do with 2x anti aliasing at 800x600 if not better. Trust me, it will run GREAT. Make sure you have a good sound card too, that's a big part of it.

   I couldn't believe how fast it was being shared on p2p and newgroups. Those people suck! IF they're downloading it to just get it early, ok, but they better damn well buy it! This game was well worth the money, although the CD-KEY was hidden under the LAST CD and I went nuts looking for it, I almost contacted ACTIVISION thinking it wasn't included. After all, the first thing it asks when you pop in disk one is the CD-KEY, and it's hidden under the last CD.
