Stats needed for running a Server?
« on: August 02, 2004, 06:13:42 pm »
OK so for a while now I've been thinking I should run a server.
Why?
I think I'm jealous of all the abuse J'inn + Co get.

Anyway new system specs

AMD XP 3200+
1 Gig Kingston RAM
Seagate 160 GB SATA HD (7200 not 10k)

-Is that enough to run something?
Or do I need a dedicated server setup?
(I assume dedicated would be better- but will it work)
Also is there any way to tell if my internet connection can handle the traffic or is that sort of a trial and error thing?

That PC will do fine to run the kit as long as you don't try and run the client on the same machine.
i.e. Yes that is enough and yes a dedicated box is preferred.

(I have run the SQL kit on a Pentium 233MHz with 128MB RAM on a 300kbit up cable connection, supporting up to 12 players stably... though now I run the serverkit on a Duron 1.3 (256MB) and sql on a seperate Athlon 2.5 (512MB)...)

Anyway, as you suspect your connection will likely be the limiting factor; 300kbit up will do but 1.5Mbit up is preferred.

Lots of connection tests here:
