Could prove to be an interesting topic.
I've played all the races to one degree or another (least time spent in Hydran, Mirak and Fed - I just don't enjoy flying those much).
I started out in SFC1 online as a very unsuccessful Romulan player (with a cat persona, go figure). When EAW arrived I tried out ISC, but got bored of them (found them rather easy to win with and didn't really care for being called a cheat because some people couldn't understand how I was flying them).
I joined a friend's fleet, the House of Zakath, for Starlance, and played a lot of Klingon on Mplayer and then Gamespy, continuing that into D2. Then, around the time of the Klinzhai server, I decided to finally try and master Lyran ships, having lost a lot of times to players in their ships, especially in SFC1. I tried to fly them like I flew Klingon - fast saber dancing. Lo and behold, within a week I was getting kills.
Basically, I still like to fly the other races, but Lyrans suit the way I've flown for a long time, more so than any other race. They are, imo, a pure skill race, no drones or plasma (just suicide shuttles), and not reliant on attrition units all of the time (I usually forget I have PFs if I'm in an F variant, lol). They are reasonable at mid ranges (9 to 15) and can be awesome in close. They have excellent drone defence, but are vulnerable to fighters I feel. And, they are cats, meow.
