What does the G in the F-BCG stand for??

I'm just curious....any SFB'ers know?

Some Fed ships with the G, like a FFG, DNG stand for "Improved".   If the BCG is a "Improved BCH", then where is the base one?

Then we have the DDG which is a "Guided Weapons Destroyer".   If it is a "Guided Weapons BCH", shouldn't the BCG have more then 6 drone control?

Or does it mean nothing at all, in which case, why wasn't it just called the F-BCH?

G Rack refit, that's all. The FF with a refit to G rack became the FFG. Why the BCG was so named I know not, there is no base BCH as such, so it was probably just carrying on the convention, FFG, DDG, etc etc.

I thought the "+" refits were what gave them G racks.....

CC+, CA+, DN+

Then again, that's not always the case, as the DD+ doesn't get drones.....BAH !!

so basically, they just don't make sense....lol   Damn confusing Feds !

I agree with Gook,

I have however seen one explanation of the G standing for "galaxy" in reference to these ships the Kirov and the smaller classes being of an exploration type, with a balanced weapons system and being more multi-roled.

not everything is so clear as the "Z" in the "Mirak" designations standing for Kzinti, I guess this didn't infringe upon Niven's copyright...... ;D

Sigh, such confusion and complication over such a SIMPLE issue...

The BC G has what? G RACKS.
The BC F  has what? F TORPS.
The BC J  has what? Just enough power to move!

-G stands for Guided Missile....

So DDG is a guided missile destroyer.



CG guided missile cruiser...

CGN is nuclear powered guided missile cruiser

Remember, SFB was based off of WWII (& post war) navies...

And I always thought the Z in Mirak was due to the following...

M = Monster
I = ISC
R = Rommie
A = ???
K = Klingon...

So, when faced with the choice of starting the ships with the obscure "A" for Mirak, or going with the "informally used" Z from SFB, they chose the second... :D


On the BCx issue, the thought is this.  On the bottom of the secondary hull, there's a weapon's pod (dorsal turret).  Depending on what weapon they put there, determines what class it is...

F-BCG = "guided weapons" model, as it has 2 B-racks in the dorsal turret
F-BCF = "Plasma F" model, guess what it has instead of B-racks...
F-BCJ = "New Jersey" class.  Photon boat with shock.  Why they call it the New Jersey class (due to frequent breakdowns???) is beyond me, but there it is...

I'm pretty sure Julin's explanation is correct. (And I remember BCG was termed Kirov back in SFC1 days, BCF is Bismack, and BCJ is as mentioned, New Jersey.)

BUT I LOVE this explanation!! :D

I figured as much about the BCG... though for a Federation Battlecruiser, with all those sensors for "peaceful exploration"  ;)  , you'd think it could control more then 6 drones.  Then again, the DDG is listed as a "Guided weapons destroyer" and it has 2 G-racks and 6 drone control.   I guess Feds just can't control their drones.... lol.

And I would suppose the "G" in the DNG could be for guided weapons since it has 4 racks, but the FFG isn't since it only has one.   They should of called the FFG, the FF+.

I've been saying for over a year now that the BCG needs 12 drone control. The BCV, which is the same ship(plus fighters) has double drone capability, why not the BCG? The BCF and BCJ don't really need it due to their weapon's layout, but the -G is a bit hamstrung against a C7.

Just before I say it, does anybody care for the SFB doctrinal reason why the BCG has "normal" drone control. It doesn't worry me either way because I don't use them.

PS.

The main purpose of this thread was to clearify what the "G" in the Kirov class battlecuiser stands for.  It is a little confusing as some stand for "Improved" and others stand for "Guided weapons".

While I can't see the logic in a "Guided Weapons Battlecruiser"  only having 6 drone control, I can cope with it the way it is.   I usually don't fly it anyways as I don't think it can compete with other BCH's.

In SFB, those G-Racks would be shooting AMD on the klingon front. 

A BCH would also never fly alone and additional drones could be controlled by other ships in the fleet.  The BCV has 12 control to assist it's F-14 fighters.

Sounds about right.   But what about in SFC?   

One ship per player is the rule it seems nowadays.

Taking all other races BCH's into account, is there any that are inferior to a BCG ?
