Out with the old...
« on: July 24, 2004, 09:26:07 pm »
Today I went to the new Apple store in Roseville (MN) and checked on the whole student discount thing.  They made it work, despite my lack of a student ID, and I bought my self a brand spanking new handy dandy high speed low drag iBook.
14" screen, 768 megs RAM, 512k cache, 1.2 GHz processor (don't scoff PC users- these 1.2 GHz pack more punch than you'd think).  Along side of that I got an iPod 20 gig.  normally that one goes for $299, but got a $40 rebate, and also a $200 mail in rebate for being a student and buying it with my iBook, respectively.  In other words, I got an iPod for around $60.
I've been putting off booting it up to play with because I know I'll spend the whole night messing with it, and hadn't eaten, but now I'm off play with my new toys.
Go me!

Congrats!!  Even tho' I'm past my student days, I'm still learning..yes, even at 48 there are things to learn..presently it is how laser calibration systems operate, actually quite fun..just got to remember not to look at the light (Egon, I looked at the light)  :D

Well sure, but not as bad as crossing the streams....

Well, I guess $60 bucks isn't bad, if it wasn't an Apple and had something more than a 14" screen....

I wont argue your preference against Apples, each have their strengths, sowhat you like is your business.  What i'm not sure about is, why would you really want a screen bigger than 14"?  For me, I'd think 15" is about as big as you'd want, max if you plan to carry it around alot, which I plan to do.

I think if I had my time back I would have bought something smaller than my current laptop.  I bought a Dell Inspiron 8500 (wide screen destop replacement), and that thing is really a monster.  I'm not saying I'm not happy with it.  The bloody thing will run just about anything, with the only bottleneck being the hard drive speed (which I am thinking of fixing).

Fact is though, when I bought it I thought I'de need a desktop replacement, but it turns out that I don't.  For the most part all I do is browse the net and write papers.  I don't game as much as I used to, hence no need for so much power.  Plus, dragging the thing around is a pain in the arse.

My previous gaming habit is what stopped me from buying an Apple.  If I had my time back I would probably have went the same route as you did Clark.

I remember the days when there was a clear distinction between Mac gams and PCs.  Most PC games weren't available on the Mac, and the mac only games, as much as I enjoyed them, weren't on the same par as most PC games (generally speaking of course).
\These days, however, apple has gone out of it's way to make sure they can load as many types of software as they can, and most mainstream games for the PC are also on the mac.  Of course, SFC games aren't among those on the mac, but from what I hear this is because Taldren chose formats that won't port easily to the mac interface.  Too bad, really, but great games none the less.
So far my iBook has exceeded all my expectations, I'm very glad I made this choice.  The best part was loading everything from my iMac to it:  simply plugged the two together, made an extremely painless connection (few numbers and a click) to the iMac and downloaded everything I wanted off of it.  Sweet sweet sweet.

So cool...
Last night, i got home from class, and for the first time, dunno why i didn't rty this before, ran it off battery power.  It went 4 hours 20 min and still hadn't gotten my low power notice, though the battery was pretty well drained.  All this time on it, and I did nothing to try to conserve power while using it.  I'm not used to that kinda time on a laptop on batteries, especially without using power conservation...

More cool...
For the very first time ever I am using a computer on a wioreless network- my iBook to be precise.  I came to school decided I should check it out, and BAM!, I was online.  It was so pitifully easy, it gives me hope for creating a wireless network of my own at home now.
Also, just by turning down the brightness on the screen a bit, I managed to get a new calcualtion of how long my laptop will last on batter power: 6 hours, 15 minutes!!!
This thing SO rocks!!
