Need some tips for texturing in 3DSMax . . .
« on: July 19, 2004, 09:26:58 pm »
I figured some intrepid/experienced modeler/kitbasher could help me out with this small problem.

I have been trying to kitbash some of P81's and Moonraker's ships together to make an updated new cruiser for myself.  Problem is, when you import models into 3DSMax it is kind of a pain to change the textures on them.  I have tried to use UVW Unmap but it makes a jumbled mess of ID's and Textures that really don't make since.  I have also tried deleting the Material/Map from the model but haven't really been successful with that either.  I went to the Track and Schematic views but they do not allow you to "disassociate" textures from a particular object.   Any advanced feature I am missing or some simple procedure I need to use to delete the material from an object.  The materials on the imported objects do not show up in the Material editor making things difficult for myself.

Tricks/tips of the trade would save me some headaches.

Thanks!
Brad

Holy Crap!!  It's Brad Barr!!  It's great to see you still play SFC.  Heck, you're the reason I still play SFC.  If I hadn't found SFB2SFC I probably would've dropped SFC after a couple months.  Anyway,  good luck with your problem and a very late thanks for all you did for SFC modding.

Much appreciated.  Now that the community and models have moved far beyond my meager attempts I am hoping to contribute some of my own ideas.  I suck at 3dsmax though so it may take awhile.  Two kids makes it very slow going also.  Life really can catch up with you and take that so precious thing in your life called time . . . if we only had more.

bbarr97,

if you can not do it produce drawings, no kidding here, lots of the ships here have been made from them. most of the time it can inspire a modeller to do it they think it looks cool. Azel has had many ships made this way.
People always said they wanted the government to listen to them and now the government is listening, taking notes and names...and coming to see you soon!

OK

JOKER's tutorial was excellent help and I can now texturing a "blank" model so to speak.

What I am having difficulty doing is accessing the UVW Map coordinates for an imported model to modifiy how the texture fits on the model.  When you import a model it doesn't show it's textures in the Material box.  I can use the eyedropper but it still doesn't show me the UVW coordinates.  Any hints on how to break this down nicely?

My theory is I would have to break down the model in subsections that the original maker used . . . which is a random guessing game.  If so, I will be content starting from scratch.

Keep in mind that a lot of information is lost when you export a mesh into .mod (i mean, the material editor info or the modifier stack)
The ideal situation would be having the .max file and then you make the conversion, but that is not usually the case.
My advise would be that you should start texturing a "blank" ship to get used to it and then try a retexture. Or remap the entire ship without taking care of the actual uvw coordenates.

When you are done, try the tutorials from http://www.scifi-meshes.com/
There is one that explains MULTI/SUB-OBJECT materials that is very usefull. I'm starting with this and it has some advantages if compared with detaching....(at least I think it is better)

I hope this helps,

Mariano

You guys are very welcome, Im glad to hear the videos are of some help, I know its ALOT easier  to do once youv'e seen it done.  ;)

As for retexturing a certain section of a .MOD file, Im sorry to say that I have forgotten, & have tried to remember by trying it this morning, but no luck yet  :(

I do remember though, seems that it worked better if you imported the .mod & saved it as a max file, then open the max file. Thats the best I can for now. sorry  :-[

Your welcome guys, I'm glad I did something that was such a great help to the community.

As for new Videos, yes, there are some plans .  ;)

Since Then I have learned new techniques, for instance:
3DSMax
1) How to make a better looking break mod
2) The proper way to use "Boolean" & "Weld"
3) How to mold shapes into submission

PSP 8
1) How to make textures to fit your model perfectly
2) How to make 3D objects on your textures

These are some of the ideas I have been pondering on, now all I need is time (job permitting), & the Patience  ::)

I also have several models I'd like to complete, plus theres my addiction to "Knights of th Old Republic" I just can't seem to quit     ::)

But thats the plan anyway

Thanks for all the tips and I look forward to any other tutorials that you produce J O K E R.   I am going to continue playing around with the ship I am bashing but after that I am going to move away from feds.  There are WAY to many feds and I think I am going to go Thull's route and add to the other races.  Looking to do some more updates for the Hydrans using Thull's design as a starting ground.  Update to textures for them would also be nice.
