The ultimate penalty
Coach questions call, shot to death on field by referee

Quote
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) -- A South African soccer referee pulled a gun and shot dead a coach who questioned one of his rulings, police said on Sunday.

Inspector Mali Govender of the Grahamstown police in the Eastern Cape province said a fight broke out after the referee gave a yellow warning card to a player in a local match on Saturday.

"There was an altercation...and the referee became threatened when the other team approached him because they were angry," Govender said. "So he pulled out a gun and killed the coach of the visiting team."

Govender said the coach died on the field while the referee fled the scene. Police were confident of making an arrest soon, she added.

South Africa has one of the world's highest murder rates with an alarming 47.4 murders per 100,000 people, or eight times the figure for the United States.

I bet he doesn't get too many calls questioned in the future.  If he's allowed back on the field.

What do you expect in a nation where rape is only a misdemeanor (actually don't know if that's true, just heard that).

In truth, that's pretty shocking.  Perhaps the Ref had been harrassed a lot recently and finally couldn't take it anymore.  Talk about drastic measures in enforcing your judgement!

It's tragic when sportsmanship leaves the game.

It's tragic when sportsmanship leaves the game.

Especially when it is children playing the game and the parents acting up.
Only in America .....do we use the word 'politics' to describe the process so well: 'Poli' in Latin meaning 'many' and 'tics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'.

And they wonder why no one wants to coach the game anymore....

Funny thing is... my dad is set to retire in a few years... he wants to get back into coaching....

I feel sorry for the guy who tries to get into my dad's face... he is gonna verbally abuse him and if he has the balls to swing at my dad... he will put him in the hospital....

It will probably be a short coaching career. ::)

Problem is, he is a damn good coach who WILL play all of his players at any level....

I still remember my 8-11 yo Mustang team... championship game, my dad put our worst player out to bat when we were tied in the bottom of the 6th (last inning at that level).

He hadn't had a hit all year....  he had his first on the last game of the year.  A suicide squeeze bunt.  I scored from third. We won.

The boy moved away the next year.  When I last saw that kid about 6 years ago.

The thing he remembered about me was my dad b/c he gave him the chance in an (to us) important game.

It is one of the many reasons that make me proud to call him my father.
