How do I set up OP for new Dyna Directory Server?
« on: July 19, 2004, 11:22:13 pm »
Well, I finally got SFC working again, turned out to be some off the wall problem screwing DirectX up.

Anyhows, I want to play in the Dyna now but I don't have it set up for new servers.
I think there was a thread about editing a text file with some new IPs, but I can't find the thread.

Can someone help me?

-Thanks

OK, I got it in, but now it just says I have a firewall, so it can't connect...

Now I do have a firewall, but its configured for SFCOP, and even gives me this massage when the firewall is disabled.  Any ideas?

Make sure the syntax is correct, no commas or quotes out of place.
it will NOT work if this is not the case.

[WONDirectoryServer/Addresses]
0="63.101.60.125:15101"
//0="sfc2.west.won.net:15101"
//1="sfc2.central.won.net:15101"
//2="sfc2.east.won.net:15101"

I'll email you my file when I get home from work tonight.

Still no go.  I know its getting the IP.  It will give a different error if I have the wrong IP in there, IE 124 instead of 125.

<rant>
 :soap:

TURN IT OFF FOR CHRIST'S SAKE JUST TURN IT ALL THE WAY OFFF!!!!!!  (sorry)

Many claim their software firewall (zonealarm) has no effect on multiplayer SFC, I don't buy it.
I used zonelarm with SFC for a number of years - had nothing but trouble, as soon as I
stopped using it - no more wierd disconnects or crashes... imagine! (I use a router now instead)
You must be able to ping your machine from the internet - no "stealth" crap which is bad for networks anyway...

You cannot be assured that the virtual gateway that zonealarm  (or other sotware firewalls) add to your tcp/ip protocol is not messing things up, that simple... I wish everyone would turn off their software firewalls (and browse sensibly) to see how the D2 stabilises... If you are using MS's ICF then it cannot be configured for SFC (no port ranges)...

</rant>

Let us know how it goes when you have turned off ALL software firewalls, on-demand virus scanners and other resource hogs...

EDIT: oops I see you've already tried disabling the firewall - knee-jerk reaction there...

They are all off, and no Change.

I have used Norton Firewall for Years & Years with no troubles.  But just check and see, I turned it off and tried to connect... No change.

Yes. And was pinged successfully. I also tried JD's settings:

0="sfc2.west.blackfleet.net:15101"
1="sfc2.central.blackfleet.net:15101"
2="sfc2.east.blackfleet.net:15101"

When pinged they resolve to the correct IP as well.

I dunno.  I never tried.

All my other games work fine, only this one has connection issues, only only since the change.

MY IP: 208.245.18.38  I think that Norton blocks pings (or was it just Port scanns, I don't remember)

Ping me.

What make and model is your cable modem?
Are you using a USB or ethernet connection to the cable modem?
(I reccomend a network modem)

If it is Norton firewall you are using, is it really off? I find most norton apps claim to be disabled but leave their services running, try stopping all the Norton services manually if they are not already.

Your public IP has to be pingable to play... (as well as have the right ports open)

When I disable the Firewall it turns off all the services.

I use a Network Cable, not any ugly USB cable.

I played a game in OP just a few minutes ago (GSA), but now I don't see peoples games when they host them.

It seems OP is acting kinda random.

running out of ideas here... you have to establish that you can be pinged (still can't see you).
Something is in between you and the internet, you need to establish what it is. (time for a call to
your ISP? )

For review, make sure your
C:\Program Files\Taldren Software Inc\Starfleet Command Orion Pirates\MetaAssets\ServerProfiles\Multiplayer\WONServerSetup.gf
looks exactly like this (make sure it is not read-only before editing it):

Code: [Select]
Name="ServerSetup"

[Settings]
SingleThreaded = 1
CreateCentralSwitch = 0
SinglePlayer = 0
BlockSize = 10000 // How many micro-seconds to spend on server side stuff before doing page flip
DelayMultiple = 1.0 // What multiple of time to wait before going back to server side stuff
PacketQueLimit = 75 // What

[CentralSwitchSetup]
Listen = 0

[WONDirectoryServer]
//ServerPath = "/StarFleetCommand2/Game/Release"
ServerPath = "/StarFleetCommand2/Game/Release"
//ServerPath = "/StarFleetCommand2/Game/Release_Test"

[WONDirectoryServer/Addresses]
0="63.101.60.125:15101"
//0="sfc2.west.won.net:15101"
//1="sfc2.central.won.net:15101"
//2="sfc2.east.won.net:15101"

[Clients]
ChatClient = 1
SecurityClient = 1

[Launch]

... but that still won't solve the problem that you cannot be pinged...

Well, it can't be the firewall.  Worked for years no troubles, and I can play games now, just certain hosts I seem not to be able to reach.  I'm going to continue gathering data to see fi I can't figure this out.

OHH I'm so excited - I have the most intresting new information!!!!!

www.dynaverse.net IS 63.101.60.125!!!!!!!

So in the File you should be able put "www.dynaverse.net:15101" instead of whats there and it should work!

Now for the problem:
I have already noticed that I get random dropouts from dynaverse.net when I try to read the forums.  Sometimes I get no conection at all! (Firewall or no firewall for those who care *Cough*Bonk*Cough*)

Now here's what I tried to get a overall view of my situation:
I did a continuous ping of www.dynaverse.net(63.101.60.125) until I decided it to stop.
What I found was 1) that my pings ranged from 79 to 376 with an average of 169 (EWWW Crappy ping
-                         2) That I got a loss of %11 where I got no responce at all.
-                         3) I had another neat tool that let me know the starfleetOP.exe sent 15 packets to www.dynaverse.net:15101 when it tired to conect to the Dynaverse but got no responce back from the servers!!

Now I really belive it to be some kind of Network condition between me and Dynaverse.net, or Dynaverse itself becuase I got no syptoms when connecting to others sites (Yahoo, GZLeagues, Taldren Forums, Google just to name a few) and my ISP (Raod Runner) has a solid network, a leading ISP(However, I don't rule out the possibility that it may be them).

Sooooooo, I think I'm just screwed, becuase I doubt Dynaverse will bend over backwards to help little ol me out.

I suppose next comes a traceroute to see if I can pinpoint the slowness.

Have you determined if your public IP address can be pinged? It is still necessary and probably explains why you get no response back from the directory server.

If you cannot be pinged there is still some kind of firewall in the way. It may not be on your machine but in the cable modem or further upstream on your ISP's network... whats the cable modem model and make? have you called your ISP?

Can you connect to other LDAP style servers?

I don't know abou the ping thing. I guarantee you nothing of my Machine configuration has changed since Taldren closed, and my dyna worked before that.

#2, this problem does not affect any other Internet software I have
#3, With just that above evidence, how does one arrive to the conclusion that the problem resides on my side?  When I am the constant, and the variable is the Dyna, and that all other Constants remain unaffected?

However, since I don't know about my ISP's network till I call them and ask, its sill a possibility.

Next:

Take a look at the below trace route.  There is some switch/router or whatever that seems to be the soruce of my losses.
Look at 63.101.63.129 (dis-01.plano.beartech.net), that seems to be the source of my losses.  With 20 reps per hop, I already suffered %5 loss, and its average ping was similar to what I posed above.

That kinda sucks.

Does anyone elses Traceroute hit the same thing?

Try using tracert from a dos prompt on your own machine and see what you get. (I'm behind a firewall at work now so I cannot compare.) I do notice that a tracert to www.dynaverse.net resolves to loki.xenocorp.net [63.101.60.125]...

Have you tried renewing your DHCP lease? There have been a number of DNS changes that may be confusing your machine if connected to an expired DNS server on your network...

assuming you're on XP:

Code: [Select]
>ipconfig /release
>ipconfig /renew

Do you have any manually added entries to your hosts file that may be expired?

Yeah, I renewed it, and reset the modem.

The reason I didn't use a tracert is becuase it doesn't repeat ping at eatch hop, so kinda less accurate.  However, I'll do it and post the results.

I have no thoguht about the hosts file, but doesn't that just affect Internet Explorer?

Get this!

I didi a Visual Trace Route, look at where this stupid Internet Takes me!

Remember I live near Austin, TX, and apparently, Dynaverse is near Plano, TX.

IT TAKES ME ACROSS THE US! GOD DANG THE NET.

Also look, I get problems as I get taken through a portion of a AOL network! LOL!
