Bethesda just announced a new game...
« on: July 12, 2004, 04:59:43 pm »
...and it's Fallout 3.  Seems they inked a deal with what's left of Interplay and have full creative control over its development.

Uh, no.  This is probably as bad or worse than Interplay not doing it.

You're nuts RB...Betesda has made some awesome games, especially Morrowind, which was fantastic.

I am no fan of Morrowind.  Bad controls, bad dialog, bad quests, utterly pointless, and way too over-praised in spite of its mediocrity.  A better choice for this would have been Troika or for Bethesda to have hired ex-Black Isles employees to continue their work, but they didn't.  Bad, bad news all around.

You gotta be joking.  Did Fallout 2 really do that great...and didn't Fallout:Brotherhood of Steel like die an early death!?

Fallout 2 is probably the best RPG game ever.

Anyways, heres the lineage.

Wasteland (kinda)
Fallout
Fallout2
Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel
Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel

Tactics, as it is, is a squad based RPG, much like the SWAT games.

Fallout BOS is a first person pile of steaming dung on the XBOX that received terrible reviews and commercial failure.  Too bad they were already 1/4 into Fallout BOS 2 before it flopped. HA!

Fallout 3 (Van Buren, for those following the story) was in development at Black Isle before Interplay died.

After that, Interplay (just recently) annoucned a Fallout MMORPG (think Galaxies) to dig them out of their financial trouble. And now this new announcement? weird.

Heh, I love the Fallout Games, except for the Last two.Didn't EA try to do a Semi-Sequal between Wasteland and Fallout 1?

And Yes I agree Fallout 2 was one of the Best RPG's ever. Right Up there with Planescape Torment IMHO.

Man, now don't think I'm a nostalgic loser, but I'm playing Fallout 2 right now for like the 10th time. Just entered Navarro, gonna get my powered armor, and go kill some scumball slavers.

Except for the last two, Meaning the FPS on Xbox and Tactics? I couldn't agree more.  I've never played Wasteland though. Here's hoping FO3 isn't Morrowmind with guns.

It's a Program that Slows down DOS Games Because of The Power the Proccs have now. If you didn't use It, You would click the move left button one time and your Characters would Fly to the east and Die.

Imagine trying to play Ultima one with the bad Boy Pc's we have today. It would be like trying to Play OP with everything at Warp Speed.

Here's some more info on this Tool

Yeah, I read penny-arcade all the time. Monday-Wednesday-Friday they update, although the news post is old. Weird.

Yeah, it was strange that it took so long to get the news post up.  That said, it's up now and was worth the wait.  Tycho really has a way with words, and is quite knowledgable on the industry and the art of gaming...

Quote
It's amazing the things you can find at junk sales.

Feel free to digest this interview with the executive producer, but chances are good you know about the new Fallout game, developed and published by Morrowind's Bethesda Softworks. Understand that this does not refer to Interplay's previously floated Fallout MMO thing - we might not know anything significant until E3, significant as in "is it turn-based" or "is it first person." This paucity of genuine data lends itself to wild speculation, but we can look at Morrowind and say that non-linear gameplay is their bag, or if not their bag itself, we can feel confident that it is at least stored in a bag of some kind.

For the same reason that I can muster enthusiasm for Half-Life 2 though I know f*ck all regarding anything about it, Fallout 3 can receive the same treatment, and for the same reason - I have faith that, like Morrowind, potent content creation tools will come along with, or shortly thereafter. There is always (to my mind) a sort of challenge implicit in distributing the suite involved in creating a game, and I want desperately to know who would rise to the occasion and precisely what would result from it. Could the High Council of Fallout Forum Purists deliver the sequel they always dreamed of? I'm curious.

As far as whether or not I think the glory days of Fallout are back, would ever be back, that is not something I expect out of this new series - and that's not an insult. The original games strike me as such oddities that I have a hard time believing they ever existed, even in retrospect. I think of Fallout as a wonderful accident of history, not some endlessly refreshed fountain, I don't believe that The Fallout Spirit projects from some eternal, unsullied coordinate in the heart of man. The SPECIAL system, that old warhorse, and the post apocalyptic yet somehow naive world they baked at Black Isle is to me emblematic of a different age of PC game development, epitomized in Planescape - and it's no coincidence that both of these games emerged from the same development house.

Action RPGs took the day at the last E3, just as stylish, ersatz Dantes percolated an entire generation of leaping action stars the year prior. When I played Fallout, and its inheritor, initiating combat and managing my inventory, did I enjoy it enough? Did I enjoy it as though the preconditions for such entertainments were disappearing? There was something precious and indiosyncratic about PC roleplaying games that I do not currently detect. We scions of that heritage are aware of the void.

(CW)TB out.
