How to "refit" SFC2 with no working servers
« on: July 11, 2004, 08:05:09 pm »
I wanted to play SFC2 so I tried to install, and had to run the refit to "unpatch", but since no servers are alive, it won't unpatch.
Any workarounds?

I am not sure I understand your question. If you uninstalled the game, you should be able to install it, patch it and play. If you need access to the D2, it has moved and I can point you to a thread that tells you have to fix your files so you can play on the dynaverse. If you need patches, I can help you there too.

Please let me know what help you need and I am sure someone can help you.

Can't patch the game without running the refit utility, which apparently requires an ftp connection to taldren for some odd reason. Game won't run at all in it's current version (so I can't tell what version it is).

You don't need the refit utility to patch the game. Just download the patch and apply. You can download the patch from many places.  Try

Hmmmm, it said I do, but I'll see if I can figure out what version I'm running (the game won't run at all at this point).

This might be off target but I installed the game and couldn't even enter the cd key to fire it up. Once I disabled visual themes for it in xp it worked fine.

Yeah I can't even get that far before my machine locks. Im running 2k here so I'll see if I can find visual themes (not sure if 2k has that).

EAW. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling (deleting the directory folder), tried running both sets of patches (at seperate times of course), and have tried running both exes. Both exes lock my machine, and I can't even get far enough into the game to put in the cd-key. I'm running 2k, and I have the most current geforce drivers and dx9.0b, so I'm at the limit of any tricks I know.

hmmm.   have you run Windows Update?   Virus Scan?   Add-aware?

Do you have issues with any other application?

No issues with any other game, run virus scans at least twice a week, use adaware and spybot when I do that. Using latest version of DirectX and latest version of the Nvidia drivers. Also have all the updates except for journal viewer as I don't have that application on the machine. I noticed when I ran one of the patches, it would say missing file, and the other worked right, so I'm assuming it's 2.002 out of the box (tried running game patched and unpatched from both exes). Never played it that much when I bought it as Dynaverse wasn't working so I'm just getting a rather bad taste in my mouth from this. Wish I had folks in town to play SFB with instead, LOL.

I can get it to not lock the machine now, but it just hangs, and I get an error message that only says "???".

Hope we can get it working for you.  I'll do some more asking around.   Dynaverse is a real hoot!

Anyhow, seems like I remember something about running things in teh background or something.   So, try turning everyting off, anti-virus, firewall, etc.  Also, turn vsynch off on your video card (that used to make me hang in the 3d portion of the game, which isn't exactly your problem yet, but still a problem for some).

Got everything off, think yahoo messenger might have been causing it to lockup, but I figured someone might be able to tell me what that odd error message was. It literally had "???" and an "ok" button and that was all.

Try this;

Look into your SFC2 directory for a file called "SFC2Intro". It's a blink file. Rename it. (I suggest XSFC2Intro).

Launch SFC2 from the icon in your directory, not the start menu. My computer would lock up when I launched SFC2 due to a video driver problem.

Good luck

Figured I've give Amazon a shot and several places have it there.   You might check your favorite online game store, they might have it as well, it's only about 10 bucks (U.S. dollars), so it's practically a steal at that price.   What get's me is I looked up Bridgecommander while I was there and it's roughly 70-130 dollars from the various vendors there.   What the heck?!?!?!

Nope, no lock ups but still getting the error message "???".

Have you updated your video drivers?

It's the most recent nvidia driver. Went back one and it runs fine now.

Aha, I had that problem with a few games (but never had EAW on my HD at the time).

Launch SFC2 from Starfleet2.exe.  Bypasses the videos and the 2K/ XP keyboard problems.
