I'm getting slammed, about one every 20 minutes. Anyone else getting this?
W32.IRCBot.gen keeps hitting me, Norton picks it up and deletes it. The problem being when I am in OP, Norton pops up telling me it detected and deleted the virus, minimizing op. And locking up my comp.
This sucks.

run OP in windowed mode... Someone might want to check this out, as it has to do with the chat server (which is basicly IRC channels). The server might have this virus and is passing it on. Someone please check this out. Thank you.

Please, keep posts on this thread on topic... This is serious... If there is a backdoor trojan on the IRC servers (If you are using the dynaverse, you are on the IRC server, and thus probably have this trojan), THIS NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED! Does no one else see the seriousness of this matter?

Likkerpig, you should be able to tell Norton to not inform you of the intrusion attempt avoiding the minimizing problem.

Brush... This does not fix the problem.... This trojan, like all others, allows hacker(s) to attack ones computer. Since he apparently got it from the D2 IRC server, this is a problem. That means that this server is more than likely sending this trojan to other as well. IIRC XC owns the IRC servers... Could Frey please check it out or something.

It may have come to you via an e-mail that looked like it was from Symantec.

I think I got this virus last night too when I opened a link at this message board.  Fortunetly, my Anti-virus software was able too destroy it but it got me worried their for a few minutes.

Forgive the ignorant question: Must I buy Norton AV?

The ONLY thing I do with my PC is SFC (and Teamspeak).

All my web browsing, email, and all other computer related work is done in relative safety on my Mac.

I run an anti-virus app on my Mac only to check the occasional Office doc for macroviruses.

Technically you should but since you only use SFC/Teamspeak, you can probably get away with an online virus scan each week or month depending on how much you play.  The main thing is that once a virus gets on to your machine it will try to use your machine to infect others.  So you are not only trying to protect yourself, but you are protecting others as well.  Some people will say that even a virus scan is not needed since it is all about Email attachments anyway.  But that can all change on a dime and we all can be right where we were before the whole Email virus fad started.  Personally I would get an antivirus but then I don't use a Mac so your mileage may vary.  Hope this helps.

If your pc is connected to the internet you need anti virus.  YOu can get McAfee, Norton or some other one but stick with the big dogs.  The safer teh better.

If your pc is connected to the internet you need anti virus.  YOu can get McAfee, Norton or some other one but stick with the big dogs.  The safer teh better.

In that case what you need is a firewall to stop the nasties from getting in. A hardware firewall is useful and some routers have good ones built in, or you can go the software firewall route. I also think it is useful to have an anti-virus program working in real time to detect virus like activity on your PC, but that will be less usefull to you in your special case. Last thing is a scanner and virus removal program which you really don't need in your case, unless the firewall fails.

And must you buy Nortons? No, not at all. In fact there are some excellant free firewall and anti-virus tools available, but if you want features you might have to pay. Get yourself a firewall first and go from there.

Of course I'm paranoid and use hardware and software firewalls, realtime monitors, and scanners. I also screen for mal-ware (spyware) as well as viruses.

In future I suggest you read the whole section. It can't do that by itself. The PC needs to be receiving commands from the hacker to do that. 2 years after it's release that is not likely.

Playing games on the internet REALLY opens the computer up to virus and other hacker attacks.

A combination of hardware (ie, router) and software (ie, zonealarm or other firewall product) is really optimal. Even that combination is not fool proof.   

I have twice gotten virus's while browsing the web. In both cases, I don't know what happened, but I obviously clicked on something I should not have and a Java script did something evil. In both cases, Norton IMMEDIATELY caught the problem, before any damage was done. 


I actually do not use game spy because gamespy requires me to open multiple ports in my hardware firewall. It just seems like something I should not be doing.    Sort of like cutting a hole in a condom prior to use.

Actually using GSA is not that bad. There are a few reasons, one of which is safety in numbers, and another is that it's not Microsoft's Internet Explorer. This means that there are a lot of better targets out there and if something happens via GSA it's likely to get jumped on quick.

The way the Windows world is going recently, I'll only be running it as a guest operating system on Linux through VMWare as soon as I get computer powerful enough to do it.

I know... just reinforcing the point. The optimal security setup should be standard for ever internet user. If someone isn't secure, that someone becomes a platform for worms to attack from and is therefore part of the problem.

Yes but given that most people don't appreciate the difference between scanning email, scanning your hard-drive and real time monitoring, what are you going to do? Like parenting, there is no level of training required before you can get a PC and get connected.
