GW2 J'inn Goes Nuts (yes a clubhouse thingy, kinda)
« on: July 08, 2004, 06:38:07 pm »
Somewhere in Washington D.C.    . . . .

Our hero, J?inn, sits in the offices of a very well know psychiatrist.   The waiting room is empty.  They schedule it that way.   I just wouldn?t do to have two kleptomaniacs in the waiting room at the same time.  Too hard to watch them both.

J?inn looks around at the expensive yet oh so soothing artwork.  Immediately his keen financial senses spring into gear.   Rent . . . lots.   Furniture . . . lots. . .    Damage to my wallet . . . lots.

He thinks of leaving . .. But no . . .  He needs help.  Badly.

So he waits . . . for a very long time . . .

J?inn: Hey, I?ve been here for 30 minutes.  What gives.

Receptionist: <hand slides down to the stun gun under the counter> The doctor will be with you shortly sir.   He?s just coming back from a conference.

J?inn: APA conference.

Receptionist: No, yacht club.

J?inn:   ugh.   Should I ask how much this is going to cost me?

Receptionist: Depends, what are you here for?

J?inn: Depression.

Receptionist: Ooooo no you don?t want to know.

J?inn: Ugh . . is he a good doctor?

Receptionist: Oh he?s great.   Just look at me.  I?m a recovering nymphomaniac.  Used to be I couldn?t talk to a man for more than a few moments without trying to get him into bed.

J?inn: Reallllllyyyyyy.   <Gets up and walks over to receptionist area> Ya know.  Sometimes I hear it?s good to have a relapse or two.  Trust me.

Receptionist: Really?

J?inn: Absolutely honey.

<interior door flies open>

Doctor: J?inn!!  Get way from her and get in here!

J?inn: Grrrr!

J?inn walks into the office.  It?s nice. Several plastic plants.  The doctor?s barco lounger with a Louisville Slugger propped against it.  And of course . . .  ?The Couch.?

J?inn sits down on the over stuffed couch and fidgets.

Doctor: Well it?s good to see you again J?inn.   Although I never thought I?d see you as a patient.

J?inn: Really?

Doctor: Okay I was being nice.  So what?s up?

J?inn: I?m depressed.

Doctor: Your mother hated you?

J?inn: No.

Doctor: Okay. I?m stumped.  Here take these pills.

J?inn: HEY!!  Your supposed to talk to me!!

Doctor: <looks longingly at golf clubs in corner>

J?inn: You know, actually therapy here!!

Doctor: They are really good pills.

J?inn: TALK!!

Doctor: Alright . . .   When did you first start feeling depressed?

J?inn: Well being a Kzinti here on Earth is hard and . . .

Doctor: A what?

J?inn: A Kzinti.  You know.  From the planet M?Raa.  Vicious.  Bi-pedal feline.  Yet oh so adorable.

Doctor:   <Flips open pad and starts writing furiously>

J?inn: Well it all started when I decided to come up with the General War Campaigns.

Doctor: <looks up> Wha?

J?inn: It?s an online Star Trek Game.

Doctor: OH DEAR LORD!! <starts writing faster>

J?inn: WHAT!!??

Doctor: <cough> Erm nothing.  Go on.  Actually wait a minute. <hits intercom and yells into it>  Cancel all of my appointment for the next week!   And get out the ?Emergency Kit?   Okay, go ahead.

<In the main room the secretary opens a box holding a large stun gun and starts charging it up>

J?inn: Well I was working on GW2.   You know, the second installment.  And well . . .

Doctor: Is that when you cracked?

J?inn: Nah.  Not then.   I remember it as if it were yesterday . . .   I went to the Clubhouses . .

Doctor: The what?

J?inn: Where the Federation players and the alien players hang out.

Doctor: <writes more>

Ah yes . . .   That is when it started.

Doctor: Go ahead . . .

To be continued . . .

You'd think that they'd have a larger reaction to seeing a 6 foot bipedal siberian tiger walk into the office.  I guess they just don't see what we all see.  Perhaps a group prescription of anti-psychotics is in order all around.

But, seriously, don't take meds.  They not only screw with your ability to concentrate and think but also with your ability to screw (sexual side-effects).

It depends on the person and the meds. If you have adverse reactions to one type, you try another. Life without the meds can be really bad. Myself, no problems with Zoloft. Everything works just dandy south of the border.

TAKE THE DRUGS!!

Even if you don't need them, you can always slip them into Chuut's drink next time he's up to the D.C. area.   Talk about entertainment.

Here's an example:

Chuut + RedBull = Joe Pesci  (n'kay, n'kay, n'kay, letme tellya......)
Classic.

Hope your doing well J'inn.  We all miss your 'special' wit you bring to our community.

A simple reason not to take meds is simply that depression is a much more complicated condition than can be addressed by medication.  Even if we were to assume that depression is totally dependent on only an insufficient amount of seratonin at synapses, these meds are like swatting flies with a shotgun.  There is no possible way to target some "correct" level of seratonin.  The problem would more likely be more systemic and complex than parts  per billion at synapses.

From personal experience I have to disagree with you 100%. A few weeks ago I was in a very bad way. Now I can lead a somewhat normal life, hopefully to get better. For you to advise someone to forgo medication prescribed by a medical professional is very irresponsible.
You have some very scientific lingo there, have you ever suffered from depression? Do you have an alternative to taking meds? Maybe "suck it up and quit feeling sorry for yourself"? or "it's just a phase you are going through"?
Speaking for myself, 7 weeks ago I was going to take my own life, or someone else's. Manic depression. I've had it all my life, recognized the signs and got help. Part of that was medication. I'm alive, four fortunate souls who happened to be around when I was at my lowest moment are alive.
How dare you be so arrogant to tell someone not to take medication, because you don't believe it does any good?

Manic-depression is signficantly different from situational depression which I would assume that J'inn would be suffering from at this point in his life.  You should certainly be on meds if you are a danger to others or yourself.  In fact, if you are, have been, or continue to be suicidal, you should be under observation.  Bipolar disorder is indeed a lifelong problem but situational depression is not and you may be surprised to know that bipolar disorder can be treated with a completely different set of medication than is depression in general.  Those most efficacious often retard seratonin at synapses rather than enhance it as do MAOs, although I may be misremembering this as it has been some time since I looked at these issues.

There is a general trend in this society to medicate problems, Viagra, Ritalin, Zoloft, etc, etc, rather than address the root cause of disease.  Situational depression would be much more effectively handled by the "talking cure" than popping Zoloft.  And just for your information, I happen to have a degree in psychology, so I feel that gives me some room to speak.  I am not a licensed physician but anyone that is functional enough to seek help, write a comedic piece about it, and is likely suffering from a situational depression due to a tramatic life event is certainly not a candidate for medication in my book.

By the way, I am glad you are feeling better and that you got the help you needed.

As I said, I can only speak from personal experience. One of the groups I was a part of advocated not taking medication, for some of the same reasons you stated. It was definately the wrong thing for me to do.
Now if I could get a magic pill that would stop my urges to hijack threads, the world would be a better place!

Yes but it's more expensive to buy Dewar's that way.

I do some work in this field and know a quite a great deal about this and I would not advise him of stop taking his medication. If you have a psychology degree you would know better than to tell someone to stop taking their meds. This person we are talking about has probably been suffering with this for sometime now and has putting off getting treatment saying no I don't have depression. This is being in denial of what he could be suffering from. I work with those that suffer from schizophrenia, bipolar, unipolar disorders and all sorts of Anxiety disorders.

Yes there are side affects but over time the will wear off once you have found the medication that is right for you.How can you talk about Viagra and Ritalin they are not psychotropic medications.we don't know what this person is really diagnosed with so don't make false assumptions. You may have a psychology degree but you are working in the field are you.I not giving medical advice out and I would suggest you do the same. The only advice I will give to this person is support.
