Bonk or DE: Webmap question
« on: July 13, 2004, 09:08:49 am »
Can a Webmap be set up do do everything it does now but not show the location of bases?

Info needed for future reference.

Yup... not hard, minor edits, could make it an option... (spoiled some plans did we? ;) ) Base placements come up in the news anyway - but someone has to be there to see it... ah, base placement in the wee hours... ;)

P.S. it occured to me yesterday to create a webmap that requires login on your server account and only shows hexes owned by your race... would be a pain but possible...

yes, it does report in the news.  But people have to pay attention to the news. that doesn't always happen.

IMHO, destructable bases and a webmap is just dumb, especially on a server with few mandatories in neutral and stock base missions.  Nothing wrong with having to do your own recon.

That said, I am guilty of taking out several alliance bases on LB5 and will take advantage of any resource that is legal.   Any smart player will.

Figured that was the concern, I understand. Unfotunately my key supply base for the front was destroyed on a deep strike well before the webmap was up...  :(  I saw both enemy bases placed near the front before the webmap was up, both were destroyed before the webmap was up.

I'd comment more but I'm troubleshooting my stepfathers network over the phone...  :banghead:

Bonk:

My opinion, the webmap should tell us exactly what we'd see when we're logged into the D2.

Terrain, DVs and ownership of all hexes.  Enemy bases only show up when they're in LOS of the team.  That might be too hard to do, so we might need to suppress base display totally.  You're the expert on this, let us know what you can do.

I'll make a version with base display as an option tonight, I guess this is a big issue for people, I didn't think it would, as I always watch the news for base placements... On previous servers I recall sitting up very late waiting for others to log off to ensure no bases were placed without our knowledge, I guess others aren't so thorough.

In any case its no problem to disable base display entirely, but as you suggest showing only enemy bases in the LOS of the team would be rather complicated and would require a login to view the map. I haven't gotten to the servcharacter table in the flatfile yet (or the roster would be up) so it would be a while to implement it anyway.

I can provide a map with a configurable option to display bases rather quickly though - I'll make it a priority.
Hopefully I can do so tonight... (but I corrupted my samba installation last night by opening the shiplist over a samba share from excel... crashed the server and client completely, corrupted the MySQL tables and all the locking databases used by samba and now I can't seem to restore my brlock.tdb file for my samba installation...  :banghead: ARG!... anyway...)  I can edit my scripts locally on the server till I get samba back up and running, I'll forward a copy of the base optional map to Cue and Fluf as soon as I have it done.

While on the subject however, I notice that the Klingons were given zero bases in home territory where all the other races have been given bases nearer the edges of their territory, its a a good thing movement is set to two seconds or the Klinks would be considerably hampered by this handicap... Was this intentional Fluf?

Do we want planet display on the map to be optional as well?

Planets should also have a switch, I figure that the enemy would know the location of planets since you cant just build one. But a switch so others can turn them off.

Let it show it all, after all if a ship can't get more than 2 hexes deep in the vastness of space, which is apparently analagous to landwarfare, then the position of planets will be known as well as the position of fixed installations like bases.

Not concerned about this server Gook.   just would like to have the option availble to disable it on future servers.  The setting work fine for LB5, just would like more options as an admin.

Cool, so I don't need to rush this? I'd like to try and recover my samba installation before continuing work on my scripts... it will be much easier... (I'll make planets and bases optional display items.. any other suggestions?)

Done. Planet and base display is now optional on the OP flatfile webmap. (sent a copy to MrCue and Fluf for future use)

Now to decide whether to work on the php-sql shipyard on *nix or add the roster, battles etc. to the flatfile map... hmmm...

(Got my QNX 6.2.1 installation redone with MySQL 4.0.18-max, Samba 2.2.7a, Apache 1.3.27 and PHP 4.3.1... I nearly blew a gasket trying to port apache 2.0.50 and PHP 5.0.0 to QNX 6.2.1 so I stuck with the old versions for now so I can get back to working on my scripts, maybe someone else will port the new versions - If not, I may try again later...)
