NT - please vote.

Here is an example.

ship class "Alpha" is commissioned in 2260. obviously thats for the "first year available" entry
ship class "Alpha" is no longer built anywhere, but is still in use in 2280
last ship of the "Alpha" class is decommissioned in 2330

when should the "last year available" entry be, in 2280 or 2330.

Keep in mind this is for a rule for a mod im working on.

Just because Studebakers or 'Knucklehead' Harley Davidson  motorcycles aren't built at the factory anymore doesn't mean that an example that is well maintained won't run any more.  ;)

It seems more logical to use an existing ship until it is decommissioned.

But the question is, should you still be able to buy a federation ship after they stopped producing them?

And why not?

Kirk's Enterprise was hardly a virgin when he met her ...  ;)

(Remember Captains Pike and April?)

Kirk wanted command of a Constitution Class Starship. Starfleet didn't build one especially for him. His level of prestige allowed him to get his first pick, but if he'd been a lesser officer, he might have had to settle with an Anton Class or whatever.

Think of it as your player character captain's first choice of assignment versus Starfleet Duty Assignment, rather than buying the ship from the shipyard like a new car.

My first duty assignment in the Air Force wasn't even close to my first choice for assignment, but that's another story ...

Well, "in-story" you wouldn't actually be buying them, but getting yourself assigned to them.  Prestige is a measure of the amount of  influence you have.  The way I see it, the ships available in drydock are all the ships that need captains, and you are constantly being offered the opportunity to be transferred to a new command. The more prestige you have, the bigger the ships you will be offered, and the greater your ability to take your pick of assignments.  Even after a ship has ceased production, it's still going to get new captains periodically, as officers retire, get promoted, get transferred to other ships, or die.  Over the course of fifty years your Alpha should need at the very least three different captains, if not more like six or seven or ten.

You shouldn't be able to get a new one- I can't go out and buy a spanking new '42 Harley, though there are many that still run.

If you want the ship, you have to buy it while it's still in comission. If you like her, keep her and fix her as long as you can.

I have to say yes on a class to class basis,IF you're looking for Trek accuracy.Perfect example's are the Excelsior and Miranda, they have been around forever.Upgraded yes but still the same class of ship none the less.Connies NO once it's decom date arrives it should not be available anymore. The Excelsior should replace it,then the Ambassador....etc.But that's just my $.02
