Topic: A Polite Question to Named Lyran- Kzinti Players

I am a rabid fan of Larry Niven, and the Man Kzinti wars.
 And i was wondering, Did you guys pick your names, Or where they given to you by a Patriarch?
 I have no problem with it i was just wondering.

Good to hear from another Niven fan.  Chuut told me about the series, and I started reading them as a nice diversion.

Niven is still the best damn sci-fi writer I've read.  Lucifer's Hammer is probably his top work.

I've read all of the Man-Kzin Wars (though still working on the most recent one) and have spun off on Flatlander as a diversion (no Kzin, but still a pretty good story).

As for the name thing ...

Rule One.  Lyrans are monkey-dogs.  A mix of the worse fauna known.  Small, flea-bitten, useless to the universe monkey-dogs. 

Rule Two.  Please don't confuse the regal Kzin with the lowly butt-sniffers.  Hexx is Lyran ... that says it all right there .

Rule Three.  No.  No one was given a name by a Patriarch.  Though, as Fluf noted, Chuut did take his name from a character in the books.  As far as I know, he is the only one.  (PS - As a fellow Man-Kzin Wars fan, I feel it is my duty to note that Chuut mispelled his name ... Chutt-Ritt is the actual spelling ... but he brow-beats me every time I point this out).

Chuut-Ritt was a name I took from Larry Niven's Man-Kzin Wars.  He was an excellent military mind, creative and resourceful.

So you can see the spelling is quite proper despite Green's claims, but what do you expect from a Kzin named for the fact that he gets spacesick? 

We did have a KAT Speaker aka Speaker for the Dead and that is Nivenish as well.

Well Fluf just comes from a nickname Ive had since the 70's, but it is kinda cat like.  The only one that I know for sure that has a true Kzin name is Chuut-Ritt.  Chuut-Ritt was a Admiral or something in the Kzin-Man-Wars and was killed by his own offspring! 

Some of the others have some similiar names, and I have considered chaning mine to a true Kzin name.  Only problem is then nobody would know who's fault it is! 

I always wanted to ask. Is "Fluf" related to the job description "Fluffer"?

No actually the name Fluf was given to me by a lead singer in a band that I was running sound for when I was 15 years old.  I had  rather large bushy hair back in the 70"s (even had and afro for a year or two) and the band was getting kinda jealous because I had all the women in the bar back at the sound board with me!  He yelled back at me after singing Gimmie Three Steps (hey there fella with your hair colored yellow), "Hey Fluf, quit playing with the women and turn some knobs on that board!"

I yelled back "Who you talking too?"

He roared back "You, you Frizzy Little Ugly F%#k$r"

Name has stuck ever since.  Even my mother calls me Fluf lol.
