SFC OP won't launch, help
« on: June 19, 2004, 12:32:02 am »
I have not played for some time (uninstalled from HD). Now I want back in.

Popped the OP CD in and installed the game (never asked for code on jewel case).

When I click the StarFleetOP.exe, a dark square briefly comes up and a  window flashes, disapearing before I can read any message. Then I am back to my desktop.

If I try to run SFCOPSetupMFC.exe,  the program performed an illegal operation and is shut down.

What secret have I forgot to get the game running again? My res is 1024x768 @ truecolor(32bit).

What next???

First confirm that the icon you are using to start the game is pointing at the correct file:

"C:\Program Files\Taldren Software Inc\Starfleet Command Orion Pirates\StarFleetOP.exe"

and that you have filled in the Start In info:

"C:\Program Files\Taldren Software Inc\Starfleet Command Orion Pirates\"

If thats okay then check that you don't have anything selected on the compatibility tab.

All this is assuming WinXP Pro. Anyway do that and return with more info.

Try running it from the shortcut in your Start menu.

Or reinstall it. It asks you for the code when you launch it first, so you going for StarFleetOP first might throw it for a loop.

If you use the icon on the start menu also make sure it has the correct entries. For convenience you can copy that icon to the desktop. OP doesn't install a desktop icon by itself.

Also the lack of request for CD key implies that the registry info still existed and wasn't uninstalled correctly. Maybe an uninstall, delete Taldren directory, reinstall, may help.

The desktop Icon data:
Target:"C:\Program Files\Taldren Software Inc\Starfleet Command Orion Pirates\StarFleetOP.exe"
StartIn:"C:\Program Files\Taldren Software Inc\Starfleet Command Orion Pirates\"

I am running Win98se, got a 3dfx voodoo3, 198MB Ram

EDIT: I've reinstalled twice

I'm wondering about the Uninstall bit and the leftovers that may be in your system.

Each time you have reinstalled has it asked for the CD key?

Have you downloaded the 2500 - 2552 patch and what happens when you try and install it?

It has never asked for the CD key upon reinstall. I have the 2500-2552 patch. I thought the patch may alleveiate the problem, but the launch behavior is identical. I expect that once I can play at 2500, subsequent probelms will be solved. Could this be the result of a bad unistall?  Also, I had EAW installed , and OPmod on another HD so I could play each style. All were removed some time ago.

.... I just ran the DxDiag tool. It indicates DirectX Version 6.1a   SFC ran before at this version....

Get EZini, and run that thing, change the display resolution with it. Test a few to see which, if any, will work.

BTW, You are right, the Game will not ask for CD-key until the game is successfully launched.

Yes the worry about the CD key is a red herring on my part, sorry. It only asks when you start playing.

DirectX 8 comes on the CD so I'm assuming that's the required level.

Most people are using DirectX 9.0b now I think.

I hope you said no to Direct x and Gamespy when you installed the game.I would get the V2.0 Enhancement pack in the Dynaverse 2 forum and read all instruction before downloading and you don't need Ezini as it is already in there. The posters name is Pestalence.

I wouldn't get anything extra like an enhancement pack until you have the basics running. Don't be distracted by such things yet.

You are absolutly correct to want to get the basic 2500 game running first, so ignore other suggestions about updates until you have reached that milestone.

And if you really have DirectX 6 then you will want to say Yes to the installation of DirectX 8 from the CD.

However I would be more inclined to download the latest DirectX form Microsoft and install that instead.

Downloaded latest directX. That's the ticket. screen came up AND asked for CD Key.  Must have really uninstalled back when!

Thanks all.

I am d/l OP3.3  and I d/l'ed SFCOP_Chooser_V65.exe
What other "must haves"  should I get?

Which mod has the SFB models?

Oh, and what's the method for online play these days?

I hate to say this but you will have to do it all over again. The good news is that you won't have DL direct x9.0b.The bad news is that you will have to install SFC2 OP delete game folder. Then you will have to reinstall SFC2 OP say no to direct x and game spy. Then you will want to go in to D2 and DL V2.0 Enhancement Pack Poster Pestalence. This contains everything you need in it OP+3.3 and don't DL the chooser. The script in the Enhancement Pack have EAW scripts in them and many more campaigns.I sorry to have to tell you this but this what everyone has in their system. The Enhancement Pack is great though.I would delete the chooser as well. The Enhancement Pack is stickied or pinned at the top of the Dynaverse 2 forum.

 Good Luck and have fun

You really worry me, you know that.

Flane, an important tip if you have the hard drive space.

1.) Install the base game from CD and apply the patch to 2.5.5.2.
2.) Make a copy of the Orion Pirates folder. Call it Orion Pirates Original or something
3.) Install mods to your hearts content but when you reach the point of being all screwed up, delete the Orion Pirates Folder.
4.) Make a copy of Orion Pirates Original folder and name it Orion Pirates as before and you are back to step one, and can install new mods.

Be careful of Mods like OP+ that come with an uninstall. You need to do the uninstall before you re-install.

In the past I had 3 or 4 copies in use at one time depending on D2 and GSA habits at the time.
