Bit of bad news to start with straight off: Last I heard, Interplay were no more.

As to your problem...just to make sure I understand: You bought a copy of SFC2: Empires at War but got a CD key for SFC: Orion Pirates instead?

Yeah, it's a known issue Vaul. Manufacturing mishap. Sticker on the EAW jewelcase has the 16 character OP codes instead of the 20 character EAW codes. Interplay used to email out a replacement on request but...

It'd be better if you didn't divulge it in public. Someone seedy could use it.

As to your own problem I'm afraid I can't offer any real suggestion.

The best I can recommend is that somebody sends you a copy of their SFC2:OP disk, preferably the newer version with the PDF manual on it, and you can use the OP key for that game instead.

At least you paid for the key and will be able to use it, and OP is better now anyway.

What country do you live in?

Not sure I can be bothered, but as you are the Doc, can you run an AI standard patrol in 2 minutes in a KRC? If so, there is no problem and I am utterly wrong. If you cannot, then the KRC is a worse ship for AI missions than ones I know can.

Any volunteers from the US?

Of course I wonder how the CD keys are actually checked these days.

OP has a "bank" of keys that are use to verify the entered key. This bank is the same in all cds... I beleive there is some kind of equation that makes CD keys legal, and other not. Anyway, if two people share the same CD key, the dynaverse is set up that both people cannot be on at the same time. At all. They cannot be on different servers, even.

OK.. here is how CD Keys work with in the game..

the game EXE contains an algorithym that will verify if a CD key is valid to unlock the SFC title.

also this registry key is entered into your system registry.. as such, it is called upon when trying to log on to the Dynaverse.

now since SFC has a Single Player campaign mode, it has it's own version of the server kit built in.. when a person connects to the dynaverse, this Mini kit is launched, thus displaying a map to the player.. but also, as soon as you connect to the directory server where you can see all the servers online, SFC has already validated your CD key (to make sure that it is unlocked) plus this key it ghosted into the mini Server kit enabled by the game EXE.. now since the CD Key has been enabled 2 times, the directroy server will hold that CD key resident until such time as the person logs off.. this means that only 1 person can use a specific CD key while on the Dynaverse server... now as far a a person logging into a server, I do not think that the server will retain a CD key footpring, otherwise that would be a way to ban people off of servers instead of having to ban email addresses...

soo, what this means is that is 2 people are sharing the same CD Key, only 1 person can play online at a time since the CD key will ghost the directory server (and GSA client validation server).. so the person playing online will be fine, but the other person with a copy of the CD Key will be blocked from launching a multiplayer game until the first person logs off...

as such, it is not a good idea to share CD keys.

now when Interplay controlled the Validation servers, the CD Key would footprint and prevent 2 identical CD keys from being used online period, no matter if someone was logged in or not.. but when Taldren took over the Directory servers, that feature was lost.

hope that this clears some things up.

would someone sending him the 20 digit key from their EAW CD work?  I never play it online.

Probably best not discussed, but if you did you should delete/ destroy any and all SFC2 stuff you have.

Moving straight onto OP is probably a better idea from a new players point of view. Download the SFC2:EAW campaigns for OP and you get a better experience from the start.

Man pesty... you had to take my response and turn it into an essay... but I guess thats what you do best :P

Cleaven... Now that SFC (EAW) is not being published any more, it is publish domain, IIRC.

This may need some clarification. Is SFC2 (EAW and OP) abandonware simply because Interplay is defunct? These games are still for sale.

That is Pestalence not pesty and with a small p.There is no wat you could have given that advice as you don't know the game mechanics as well as he does he is a beta tester afterall.

I think you can still buy SFC1 from mail-order houses.
