Funny, I was just thinking about bumping this thread, and somebody goes and does it for me...
Looking at what's been said here mostly in the abstract, two thing struck me:
1) A lot of people seem to think that jumping into the future is a bad idea because it leaves too many questions about what happened in the meantime (between Nemesis and the future series) unanswered, and
2) Even more people want all the unanswered questions from the "Lost Era" (between ST6 and TNG) answered.
Now, personally, I think that one of the reasons that TNG worked was because they
didn't answer all the questions about what happened between the TMP era and 2364. Heck, the whole reason there's a "Lost Era" for y'all to get obsessed over is because they left all that open. (Parenthetically, I should add that I've read exactly one of the "Lost Era" novels--well, three if you count "Vulcan's Forge" and "Vulcan's Heart," which although technically not billed as LE novels, certainly take place in the period--and I can't see the fascination with them. IMO, none of the three is particularly interesting, or even particularly plausible in the Trek Universe...)
I guess what I'm trying to say is that, if a series such as Kaenyne invented for us actually were to come about, I would be solidly in favor of them
not filling in all the blanks. "Yesterday's Enterprise" was one of the best episodes TNG ever made--and it would have been impossible if we already knew what happened to the Enterprise-C. I'm a huge B5 fan as well as a Trekkie, and I personally think Trek could learn a lot from JMS and how he wrote B5--well,
in addtion to what DS9 stole from his pitch of B5 to Paramount
--and the idea of jumping into the future but leaving you guessing as to what happened in the interim is one of Joe's trademarks.
This is really isn't making as much sense as I'd hoped, so I'm going to stop now...
