Another bird leaves the nest....
« on: June 08, 2004, 02:50:55 am »
The Melak is finally online at Demon Renegade Studios. I developed a few new techniques while building this birdie and honed my skills on making organic shapes. I opted for a D'deridex style feather pattern since the reference pics from New Worlds didn't reveal much in that area. I would've added more texture details but I felt it wouldn't have seemed right in this case as the D'deridex and Melak are relatively bland and have a less-is-more style to them. The scale is a rough estimate going from the perspective views of it and the K'tinga in the movie clips, and the size of the ship's windows. The name "Death's Omen" is a slight reference to the so called "Curse of the Melak", which I think has now been broken - er, though the Apocalypse may be upon us now...

Damn! That's what I get for going to bed instead of staying up all night, LOL.

I love the pics you posted too. Almost identical to the ST: New Worlds screen captures.

Fantastic job WZ45!

The curseof the Melak is dead and buried now!

Thanks again to SovereignEmpire for bring this bird to the attention of the SFC community.

Damn good job! As an odd coincidence, I named the other late-TMP Warbird that I mentioned "Deathbird" ("Vas'D'Latta" or "Bird of Honourable Death"). Insane minds think alike!

You could ask the same thing about the D'deridex, which also doesn't have any visible impulse engines. Technically, Andrew Probert just didn't have enough time to fully flesh out the warbird design and the model builders simply forgot to add the engines to the ship. Whoever designed the Melak obviously wanted to keep the ship in line with it's big sister and most likely didn't add them either.

Back in the 80's when I was building the plastic kits for the D'Deridex, I just assumed the impulse engines were just the assemblies on the inside of the forward portion of the bottom hull. It seemed to make sense that there was no exhaust, since I figured it was reclamated to avoid laeving an exhaust trail. Not to mention the inward-facing flux chillers... The Warbird seemed to have a lot of details pointed torward stealth.

Aside from it's size, that is!

Although it obviously wasn't intentional (the D'Deridex being designed years before Star Trek VI), the lack of visible exhaust on the D'D certainly makes sense after the whole "tailpipe" scenario with Chang's uber-BoP...

indeed. That was a rather burning issue.

Btw does somebody have a good Rom BOP from TOS reference? Does she have visual exhausts?

Reaper: Yup, she does. I built a mod of the old BoP for Klingon Academy a couple of years ago, and she does indeed have two tailpipes! Bear in mind, during Balance of Terror the Enterprise could still track her, although barely...

So, what's next? Job application, making your own game, maybe even...

MAKING A MIRANDA!!!???

Seriously, will you ever redo the Miranda and her sisters (Saratoga and Soyuz,) becuase they now look extremely outdated compared to the Akula and the like. I know you hate making TMP textures, but all you need is a good microgamma font and you'd be good to go.

BTW, where IS a free microgamma font? It's probably THE font of TMP, because it's used almost any display or sticker from that time.

They altered Microgramma slightly I believe, anyway, I don't see what was wrong with the fed font he was already using myself, seemed accurate enough to me.

Adds pleas to the Miranda begging:

What is Tomorrow's Enterprise?

Tomorrow's Enterprise is Centauri Vaughn SFC: OP script that takes place before the TNG Episode Yesterday's Enterprise. It is his take on the Romulan attack on Nerendra III and the USS Enterprise C.  It should be in one of Chris Jone's latest TNG mods for OP somewhere.

Naturally, I have been using TMP models to have a new flavor to these missions, LOL. Ulysses = Galaxy, Lexington = Ambassador, K' teremny = K'vort and  Melaks are the warbirds, LOL.

I still need to tweak the Borg stats to reflect Rod O' Neal's version of the Tholians and Andromedans..

I have replaced the Cardassians with Tholians, Borg with Andromedans and Dominion with ISC... all just in time for Centauri Vaughn's newest set of scripts... I think  I'll have to do it all again....

At any rate the Melak is a fine ship and CV did some GREAT missions.

Qapla!

What's wrong with the font I'm using now? "Starfleet Bold Extended", as far as I know, is as accurate as one can get without forking over money for anything else (if there even is anything else).

I can't help but laugh when people ask me if I'll ever redo some of my past ships - if you guys only knew what I have stashed away....

So why do you torture us by not releasing some of these things you have 'stashed away'.

Oh BTW while I'm posting, do you happen to have the blank saucer textures from your Ulysses, I'm working on a carrier kitbash of it and found that the connie blanks have different grids and don't line up etc.

Nothing's wrong with teh font. I just assumed that, since you hate making TMP textures, maybe a part of the problem is because you couldn't get a microgamma font for the hull text, and so you had to use SF Bold for everything (besides the saucer, which is the only part on the model that uses it). But ofcourse, you probably have more problems with those textures than that...

Anyway, what's going on with that Galaxy you were making a while back. Last time I saw it, it was a white clay model (on SFC3.net)...

Registries are the easiest parts, well, for me anyway. I use Starfleet Bold all the time because that's what a bulk of the registries require, and I simply don't bother with switching to a different font for the hull and engines. Starfleet engineers obviously have too much time on their hands when it comes to ship labels.

W00tage, thanx for the blanks WZ, got a lot of ships based on your Ulysses that need these

What I think is more of a concern with Starfleet engineers is that they spend so much time painting bits of the ships blue and green to make them pretty
