What is Federation & Empire?
« Reply #40 on: June 07, 2004, 09:31:09 pm »
Probably a stupid question, but I've always been interested in the product, but $50 is a bit steep to buy a product I don't know much about. I know it's an empire sim, but what more can you tell me?

Thank you,

Merlin

Basicly its the strategic elemet to SFB You can Fight the entire general war by it. Plus you dont even need SFB to play it with. Also IF youve played on any of the various servers on line either on the d2 or d3 The consept for thoes comes from F&E.

$50?

You must not have looked and seen all the expansions out there... 3 out and 2 more coming. You could tie up $200 in a few months if you decide that you like it!

Hey, I've got upwards of $300 in SFB.

Khalee: Thanks for the explanation, it sounds great.

J. Carney: Yes, I've seen the expansions, Fighter Operations, etc. Trouble is, I've only got so much allowance, and I'm saving up for an SFBOL subscription.

Trust me, you don't want to give me a credit card number and the SFB Online ship URL...it's just that this cute little kid doesn't have a huge allowance. I didn't get rich parents, I got good parents .

i've got a fair ammount of SFB stuf, I just bought two modules for material on a Mod I'm making.

And if you aren't using any of your modules, I'd be happy to take them...

J/K!!

Anyhow, it's $50 for the core set, I had not considered the expansions...

Thanks much for the info, if you have any other recommendations or comments please post them

Merlin

P.S. And Yes,  I like smilies too much, shoot me.

Can't let you have them...

I'm still putting them into MY copy of SFC   ! I now even have the Seltorians in (thanks to Desty Nova and some weapon substitutions).

How long have you been playing SFB...  I'm still relatively green, but put up a good fight occasionally. If you want a newbie to toast, let me know when you get on SFBOnline.

Ahh! Another member of the Brotherhood of Modders. <S> to you mate!

As for how long...that's a hairy question. I've been drooling over the rules for about 4 years now, but I haven't finished a game through. My mum is rather uninterested, dad works far too much, and the locals are...brainless. I tried to recruit one guy, walked him through a de-boned cadet's game and he rammed himself into a planet. I was so bored to tears(not to mention annoyed) I didn't bother explianing HET's to the guy.

I did manage to find a VERY nice guy on SFBOL when I flew the demo, we flew a classic Duel, him in a F-TCC,  me in a K-TCC and I did fairly well, he conceded when I realized it was 1:00 AM. I made sure I wrote down his name so I could give him the month free when I signed up, he was VERY nice, a wonderful change of pace from the CS 1337 5-year-old campers that infest that place.

So I haven't been PLAYING for more than 2 months(since that last game I mentioned) but I am quite familar with the rules.

Whoa, long post. Bet you wish you didn't ask now .

Take care friend,

Merlin

P.S. I might like to see some of those Selts, the mod I'm woking on is the TNG for OP mod, I'm adding the Andromedans, along with Early Years ships. Tholians are already in there, so it would be a nice addition. I'll ask Chris if he's warm to the idea if you are game.

Take Care(Once again)

SFB is tactical simulation for ship to ship combat.
You directly command the individual ships in a bid to kill/cap/drive off the other players ships.

F&E is strategic simulation for fleet to fleet combat.
You directly command the economic output of the empire and ship combat is reduced to this stack of chips vs that stack of chips.

A crude analogy is SFB is a first person shooter with no long term strings attached (unless each battle is part of a bigger campaign) and F&E is a chess game with entire fleets at one roll of the dice.

Tried once to have the F&E run whats out there as ships and grand scales and then do each battle using SFB game.

using this set up you could take years to do a fed vs klingon war let alone the entire general war scenario.

Ouch.

Years, huh?

Well, what was F&E Like on it's own? Would you recommend it? or just spend your money on SFB modules?

Take Care,

Well I would, If you like thoes kinds of games, But like Toten says it does take a while to finish a whole game like maybe a month of weekends, longer if you can't get enough players together, and you have to run more than one races economy.

SFB modules arent really needed if you have the basic rule books.

You can design ur own ships.

Order of Battle for various races are listed.

Campaign suggestions are there.

Fed and Empire is really a strategic level game that turns SFB into who has the most attack factors vs who has the best defnece factors, then roll the dice.

Its a good game if you want to play strat level, where ships are nameless pieces.  I have both and they are of the same flavour but cater to different playing needs.

Yeah... i've played SFB for 3 years now, but 4 months of the first one I was at Army Basic Training and the whole last one I was in Iraq.

While I was there, I tried to teach a few of the guys in my unit Battletech and Crimson Skies (easy hex games) but today's videogame generation really lacks the patience. THey would rather play those X-box travesties thjan the boardgames. I knew better than to try even the cadet bamefor SFB... even Battle Force went over their heads.

Would be happy to let you get a look at the Selts, but there are only, like 10 of them. FF-DN, a DD Scout and PF Tender and FF & DD Commando hulls.

Iraq, huh? <S> to you again Sir! I hope to join the navy if this election goes right...As for the X-BOX nuts, I know EXACTLY what you are going through, although I would have expected more from the Military...I hear Harpoon has a very dedicated following in the navy--maybe you are in the wrong branch, lol.

I'll run the Selt idea past Chris asap, very sporting of you to let me have access to them. Are we long-lost brothers or something?

Nope, just have the same green blood in our veins... notice the sig.

What you going into in the Navy... I applied for subs once, but the parents insisted on me going to college- so I wound up in the Guard.

Ill be damned, so we do.

As for what I'm doing, I'm planning on Community College, then the Naval Academy for real college, then subs, same as you. If this election goes south or we move to Britain I'd consider a Computer Programming course or something to do with NASA and the like.

Will have them out to you in a bit... am going to a LAN party in about 15 mins (Battlefield Vietnam).

Look for them by daylight tomorrow.

BTW, good luck with the Academy... and don't forget your mandatory varsity sport.

I took a look at those selts and they have a great feel to them! You did a VERY nice job speccing them mate. They will wind up in the one of the next TNG releases if I have anything to do with it, and you will get full credit.

Thanks a bunch!
